Please Note: This event has now finished and can no longer be joined.
Welcome to the latest Doughnut Research-for-Action seminar, entitled Ethical Banking for Regenerative Finance, co-hosted with Francesco Mastropietro and convened by Doughnut Economics Action Lab.
📅 Tuesday, June 23, 12:00-1:00 PM (UK time)
Session summary
Every euro deposited in a bank is a vote for the future it prioritises. Although the world’s biggest banks continue to invest trillions in fossil fuels, ethical banks have been emerging as viable alternatives that can align financing with social and ecological needs. This seminar will explore ethical banking as a disruptive social technology, and propose an adaptation of the Doughnut that visualises regenerative finance explicitly. The discussion will focus on how alternative banks can redirect capital towards the social economy, and transform finance from a driver of climate chaos into an engine for collective social and ecological thriving.
The following resources provide relevant background context to the discussion :
Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV)
European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks and Financiers (FEBEA)
8th Report on Ethical and Value-based Finance in Europe
Banking on Climate Chaos: Fossil Fuel Finance Report 2026

Graduated in Economics and Development, focused on uncovering how financial systems can foster a regenerative and distributive economy. I believe in the power of ethical finance to drive change and rethink economics to fund a real system change, especially to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Trying to redefine finance towards the original vocation: serving the common good and the community, a great opportunity able to restore dignity to the object, finance; and the subject, the human kind.

I work in financial software development. Agile software development is a haven for the neurodiverse. Finance suits my interests in mathematics and economics, and my need for complex problems to solve. My activist background was in single-issue campaigns in the 1980s-90s that aimed to change public opinion, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Since then, humanity's primary self-inflicted existential threat moved from nuclear war to the climate emergency. While existential threats are always the priority, I believe that within capitalism all progressive changes are at risk of being rolled back, and lasting change can only be assured within a democratic economy. I'm keen to work with others on new ideas for expanding the democratic economy.
