Session Summary

This seminar will focus on the critical concept of housing as a fundamental human right, emphasizing its role in ensuring dignity and security for all individuals. Participants will engage in meaningful discussions about the barriers to equitable housing access, the impact of housing insecurity on communities, and effective policy solutions. By sharing insights and experiences from different contexts, the aim is to create a collaborative space that inspires actionable strategies and advocacy efforts. Together, we will work towards a vision where everyone enjoys the right to safe, affordable, and adequate housing, reinforcing principles of social justice and human dignity.

Speaker Bio

Monica Zazueta is president of the Vancouver Metro League of United Latin American Citizens, which advocates for equitable access to resources and human rights. Involvement with the Vancouver Community Leadership Institute and the Center for Equity and Inclusion has deepened her understanding of systemic injustices. Being born with brown skin in a society that often associates success and acceptance with whiteness, she felt immense pressure to conform, which led to self-hatred and experiences with addiction, homelessness and eviction. These challenges make housing issues deeply personal for her. Through rehabilitation and community support, Monica has discovered self-love and purpose.
