Welcome to the latest Doughnut Research-for-Action seminar, entitled Rethinking Money for a Doughnut Economy, co-hosted with Tom Foster and convened by Doughnut Economics Action Lab.
📅 Wednesday, May 27, 8:30-9:30 AM (UK time)
Session Summary
Doughnut Economics redefines how we think about growth and value within limits. This session explores how rethinking money can improve its analytical and practical application. Drawing on contemporary monetary insights, it examines the nature and purpose of money, how it is created, and how this reshapes our understanding of economic possibilities to meet the needs of all people while enabling economies to operate within planetary boundaries. The focus is on strengthening the Doughnut’s application in practice, across themes such as government and policy, cities and regions, business and enterprise, and research and academia.

I work in financial software development. Agile software development is a haven for the neurodiverse. Finance suits my interests in mathematics and economics, and my need for complex problems to solve. My activist background was in single-issue campaigns in the 1980s-90s that aimed to change public opinion, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Since then, humanity's primary self-inflicted existential threat moved from nuclear war to the climate emergency. While existential threats are always the priority, I believe that within capitalism all progressive changes are at risk of being rolled back, and lasting change can only be assured within a democratic economy. I'm keen to work with others on new ideas for expanding the democratic economy.
