Applying the Doughnut Economics to Outdoor Sports in the Alps - A Citizen Science Project

During my studies in "Sustainability" at the University of Bayreuth, I had the opportunity to take part in the "Sportainable" course with Prof. Peter Kuhn, where I was introduced to the "Doughnut Economics Action Lab". Its concepts fit well with my interests and studies, particularly its ability to merge environmental sustainability with social responsibility. When tasked with developing a project within the course, I wanted to create something that did neither rely on large companies with extensive resources, nor on expert knowledge, but instead actively involved individuals, especially outdoor enthusiasts who are passionate about making a difference.
This motivation led to my citizen science project in the Alps, where I combined scientific research with community engagement to monitor climate change in high-altitude ecosystems, where one of the biggest challenges in studying effects of climate change is the lack of high-resolution microclimatic data. With my project I aimed to find out, how feasible a project like this would be. Is there even an interest in the general public? Is the collected data reliable and high quality? Are businesses willing to collaborate?
Looking ahead, my approach gives a solid base of the possibilities of this kind of research project. Even though there are things to improve for follow-up projects, I am positive that
the expansion to other Alpine regions, the improvement of data accuracy, an increase in collaboration with local governments and environmental organizations will ensure broader impact and is a feasible next step.
If you’re interested in learning more, or even initiating a similar project, feel free to reach out. Together, we can make a difference by bridging the gap between everyday outdoor experiences and meaningful climate action.
