Elections

Elections determine who holds public office and which voices influence their decision making.

Why redesign elections?

Nurturing human nature: foster societal trust

When elections lack fairness, public trust in government erodes, weakening support for policies and initiatives. Divisive campaign tactics and disinformation further fracture social cohesion, fuelling rising polarisation worldwide.

Being distributive and regenerative by design: overcome electoral exclusion and corruption

Political finance scandals and campaign corruption remain prevalent globally. Financial dependencies can make elected officials reluctant to adopt policies that might negatively affect powerful donors. Some politicians also exploit nature to finance campaigns and gain political support.

Many vulnerable groups — including immigrants — are excluded from electoral processes. Lower-income and marginalised communities are less likely to vote, compounding inequality. Young people face systemic barriers to voting and running as candidates, with only a handful of countries setting the voting age at 16.
