Wellbeing

Tackling interconnected crises — from climate breakdown to social inequality — requires government workforces with the wellbeing and resilience to operate at their full potential.

Why nurture wellbeing in governments?

Nurturing human nature: prevent trust erosion

When government workers have poor wellbeing, they can become disengaged and cynical, corroding trust within teams and with the public. Some high-profile political leaders' bullying behaviour and divisive rhetoric toward opponents and civil servants also influence public discourse and societal values, further eroding trust and collaboration.

Thinking in systems: enable adaptive policymaking

Poor mental health negatively impacts problem solving and the capacity for long-term thinking. When fear-driven cultures become pervasive, civil servants and politicians may become more defensive and risk-averse, stifling innovation and the bold decision-making that is necessary to address complex challenges.

Being distributive by design: move towards inclusive governments

When coercion, bullying, and harassment are tolerated, governments can experience increased turnover and struggle to attract capable candidates: particularly women and minority groups. This limits diversity and representation in civil service and leadership roles.

Emerging alternatives: nurturing wellbeing in governments

There are many programmes around the world that support wellbeing in governments. Useful resources to help explore this topic include:

  • The Apolitical Foundation tracks the state of politicians’ and civil servants’ mental wellbeing, and offers a range of resources to support good practices.
  • The Global Government Forum provides insights and good practices for improving public sector wellbeing.
  • LA-BORA!gov, established by The Ministry of Public Management and Innovation in Brazil, trials innovative ways to foster positive emotions, trust, psychological safety, and collaborative relationships among civil servants.
