Community-led Eco-Design for Climate Resilience in Kampala, Uganda (Past)

Ghetto Research Lab presents their efforts to engage residents of a slum in Kampala Uganda.

Ghetto Research Lab will present their work on Community-led Climate and Economic Resilience in Kampala. The project engages youth and families living near a make shift landfill.  In the middle of a slum, an actual a lab and classroom was constructed by the community. The lab engages youth in designing strategies to address blight. Final projects include transforming waste into materials for buildings, communal toilets, urban agriculture, fashion and home goods. Youth are hired as ministers, charged with leading various aspects of the organization. Women are hired to help mass produce building materials.

In addition to grants, revenue is generated through tours, classes, vegetables harvested on site and artwork created by the community.
