Beyond GDP: A Global Commons for Accelerating Sustainable Development
Professor Phoebe Koundouri explores how economic models can account for nature, equity and wellbeing beyond GDP
Posted by Ben Lowe
How can we move beyond GDP to understand and pursue prosperity while safeguarding natural systems and societal wellbeing?
Join Professor Phoebe Koundouri for an online talk exploring how economic modelling can better integrate natural capital, ecosystem services, environmental pressures, resilience, equity and human wellbeing. The discussion will consider how such approaches can inform economic decision-making and support pathways towards sustainable development.
The event connects with questions central to Doughnut Economics, particularly how we can assess economic progress beyond GDP and pursue prosperity that benefits both people and the environment. It offers an opportunity to explore a complementary perspective grounded in environmental economics and integrated economic systems analysis.
Thursday 22nd October 2026 | 5:00–6:30pm (UK time) | Online | Free
The session will include a presentation followed by audience Q&A and discussion. It is open to everyone, particularly researchers, policymakers, practitioners, students and those interested in alternative approaches to economic prosperity.
Part of the University of Sheffield's Rethinking Prosperity on a Finite Planet series, hosted by the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures.
