Background
Communities across the world face common challenges, from environmental degradation to social inequalities, yet within each community lies immense potential for change. At the heart of our initiative, Step Into The Doughnut, is the belief that communities can and should take control of their future by building resilient, thriving local economies that are in harmony with nature and inclusive of all.
We are working with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to foster grassroots movements, driven by the principles of Doughnut Economics. This approach goes beyond traditional economic models, encouraging communities to redefine prosperity by addressing both their social needs and the limits of our planet. Step Into The Doughnut aligns with this year’s Global Doughnut Day (GDD) theme, "Local Action, Global Connection," providing an inspiring and practical way for communities to explore, design, and implement their own pathways to sustainability and well-being.
Aligning with GDD’s Four Aims
Local Action
1. Creating a reason to act:
Many communities already recognize the need for change but may not know where to start. Step Into The Doughnut offers a practical entry point by providing training, workshops, and hands-on tools to help CBOs start local action. Whether addressing issues like waste management, food insecurity, or education, the initiative gives communities a reason and a clear path to act.
2. Inspiring next steps:
For those already engaged in community development work, Step Into The Doughnut aims to inspire participants to take the next step, whether that means reaching out to new audiences, experimenting with new ideas, or navigating the complexities of systemic challenges. The initiative is designed to support CBOs in evolving their projects and scaling their impact.
Global Connection
1. Enabling global connection:
Step Into The Doughnut creates a bridge between local communities and the wider world. By connecting grassroots organizations to a global network of practitioners, participants can learn from others, share their own experiences, and grow their confidence in being part of a global movement for change. This exchange fosters mutual support and innovation among communities that might otherwise feel isolated.
2. Building a global story of change:
Every community's story is part of a larger global narrative of regeneration and resilience. By making visible the work of CBOs and their local initiatives, Step Into The Doughnut contributes to the global story of grassroots change, reinforcing that community-driven solutions are key to achieving global sustainability and justice.
