We are making a live workshop for GDD 2025 in Bogota about how the Donut theory can be brought and implemented in Latin America and from there delve into how theories and knowledge in general can be imported and adapted from the global north to the global south, tapping into the topics of colonialism, application of theories, restrictions in the global south and challenges in translation.
During the workshop we shall center a portion of the seminar on how we translated the text from DEAL on Doughnut Economics, particularly the “Hello Donut from DEAL”, in spanish “Hola Donut” and brought the practice and proposals to a grand new public that originally faced a language barrier. We will make a sweep on Donut theory, for assistants that may not be familiar to the theory in the region and explain it as a tool for support and development, and how the Donut can be situated in Latin America. It
In the workshop we plan on taking a look at how we faced the challenge of translation, the methodology and concept used to translate this particular theory and the impact it has had on Latin America. We aim to share an example and provide tools that may help the donut; and other untranslated texts, reach a broader audience and be spread around the world. Within the workshop we would like to take a deep dive on the general theory, its influence on our own project Shambala and how it may be applied to similar projects, policies and ways of approaching problematic situations.
We also aim to share the importance of transcending language barriers, specially coming from the global south and how we should approach theories. We understand that the nature of the theory encompasses a global aim yet we wish to highlight how perhaps not all of the world may have access to the theories and its concepts due to privileged dynamics such as access to a second or third language.
A central topic of the proposal is also understanding what are the central challenges of the contents produced in the global north, and analysing the complexity of proposing theories to the entire world from north to south, and vice versa. We aim to generate a deep discussion on how we from the global south should implement and adapt contents formulated abroad. It is a key element for us to give tools to develop a critical lens for digesting theories and being able to benefit from their proposals.
This workshop is aimed at people interested in environmental themes that may not know yet about Donut theory and also people that are interested in Donut and are familiar with it and wish to implement it in local projects.
The workshop will be complemented by discussions, special guests and a lengthy Q & A session for all the guests to delve deeper into the topics that may be of interest.
