What would it take for food systems to meet everyone’s needs within the limits of the living planet?

Since November 2025, DEAL has worked with more than 60 organisations and experts from across the food system to explore what Doughnut Economics means when applied to food.
Food policy councils, academics, policymakers, NGOs, businesses and community groups from four continents took part, through online sessions, workshops in Rome, and the sharing of case studies and practices from their own work.
The Rome workshops and much of this process were co-designed and made possible with the support of the American University of Rome, to whom we are very grateful.

On 19 November we are launching what came out of this process:

  • Applying Doughnut Economics to Food Systems: A Sourcebook: the story of the co-creation process, key insights, case studies shared by participants, and ways to act for policymakers, businesses and communities.
  • The Doughnut for Food Systems: A Primer: a short introduction to the social and ecological dimensions of the Doughnut for Food Systems.
  • Workshop Tools: facilitation guides for exploring the Doughnut for Food Systems with your own community, organisation or city.
