Event overview

Today's interlinked global social and ecological crises demand collaboration and collective action among governments worldwide. Multilateral systems and processes are essential to coordinating and advancing this collaborative effort. Yet institutions like the UN can often seem bogged down by bureaucracy, entrenched power imbalances, and elitism, functioning at arm's length from grassroots movements and communities.

So why does it still matter that we don't give up on the current system, and instead engage with it? Where are the windows of opportunity to influence and shape it? And how can we shift the system from within, reshaping it to meet the urgency this moment demands?

This session is co-hosted by Calder Tsuyuki-Tomlinson, who has been facilitating a collaborative network of allies working to influence UN processes on Beyond-GDP, and Xiaoting Hou-Jones, Government & Policy Lead at DEAL.

Co-host Bio

Calder Tsuyuki-Tomlinson is a research-practitioner working at the intersections of global economic, climate and biodiversity governance. He focuses on efforts for reform and innovation of global governance architectures that aim to address holistic drivers of social, ecological and economic shortfalls. He is a non-resident fellow at the UN University Center for Policy Research, and has previously worked with UN, government, civil society and academic organizations.
