#Research-for-Action Seminar: Designing and scaling multilevel eco-projects (Past)
A discussion on design considerations for scaling the development of regenerative and resilient eco-projects
Please Note: This event has now finished and can no longer be joined.
Welcome to the latest Doughnut Research-for-Action seminar, entitled Designing and scaling multilevel eco-projects, with Brian McConnell, convened by Doughnut Economics Action Lab.
đź“… Tuesday, April 28, 16:00-17:00 PM (UK time)
Session Summary
This session explores how regenerative eco-projects can be designed and scaled through a multilevel approach to systems change. Building on prior discussions of resilience, it frames resilience not simply as an outcome, but as an evolutionary design principle that can strengthen adaptive capacity across individuals, communities, and institutions. The presentation will examine how regenerative initiatives can be prototyped, networked, and iterated across scales while remaining responsive to local context. Participants will be invited to consider how more integrated forms of systems thinking can help cultivate projects that are both resilient and regenerative.
Speaker Bio
Brian McConnell is an integrated tech-media designer, systems thinker, and creator focused on advancing “conscious cultural evolution.” His work brings together evolutionary science, regenerative design, systems thinking, and media strategy to explore new approaches to community development. He is the creator of the EcoRegen.org initiative and a course on Conscious Cultural Evolution, and has collaborated with networks including the Doughnut Economics Action Lab, MIT u-school, and Transition Network. His current focus is on designing multilevel frameworks that support the scaling of regenerative ecosystems across diverse cultural contexts.

This online seminar series is co-hosted by Andrew Fanning, DEAL's Research & Data Analysis Lead, together with members of the network and invited guests. The aim is to connect scholar-activists worldwide in open and informal spaces around specific topics/initiatives related to Doughnut Economics research and action. Feel free to bring a snack. 🍩
Thank you for your interest in connecting with scholar-activist peers to explore research for action with Doughnut Economics -- we look forward to learning with you!

I work in financial software development. Agile software development is a haven for the neurodiverse. Finance suits my interests in mathematics and economics, and my need for complex problems to solve. My activist background was in single-issue campaigns in the 1980s-90s that aimed to change public opinion, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Since then, humanity's primary self-inflicted existential threat moved from nuclear war to the climate emergency. While existential threats are always the priority, I believe that within capitalism all progressive changes are at risk of being rolled back, and lasting change can only be assured within a democratic economy. I'm keen to work with others on new ideas for expanding the democratic economy.
