Session Summary

What does it mean to prosper in a territory, and who gets to define it? This session presents ongoing doctoral research exploring how Design can mediate situated transitions towards Life-Centred Economies. Drawing on a participatory Living Lab in Sol Nascente, a low-income urban territory in Brasília, Brazil, we will discuss how Doughnut Economics, participatory design and locally grounded knowledge were brought into dialogue to explore meanings of economy and prosperity. The case shows how design artefacts can make values and tensions visible, support collective deliberation, and enable prosperity criteria and indicators to emerge from lived experience rather than being externally imposed.

Speaker Bio

Carol Tomaz is an economist, strategic designer and PhD researcher in Design at the University of Brasília (Brazil). Her research explores Life-Centred Economies and how design can mediate ecosocial transitions through participatory and place-based processes. Her work bridges Ecological Economics, Design for Transitions and territorial development, with a particular interest in prosperity beyond conventional economic indicators. She is co-founder of Doughnut Brasil and founder and president of the Institute for Life-Centred Economies (IECV), a research-action initiative advancing life-centred approaches to economic and territorial transformation.
