Doughnut Economics About DEAL News & Updates Meet the DEAL Team Careers FAQ Wider Movement Contact UsI am a researcher and development practitioner in sustainable, inclusive and resilient development of tourism destinations, engaging tourism enterprises and local communities. I have been working in development, education and research for over 25 years. I lecture at universities in Asia and Europe since the mid-1990s.
I was a sustainable tourism adviser for SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in several countries in the Himalaya and the Mekong, between 1996 and 2011. I also took on the role of knowledge network leader for SNV Asia, and led its tourism strategy and knowledge development, advisory product development and profiling. During those years, I coordinated the Sustainable Tourism Eliminating Poverty partnership with the World Tourism Organisation and partnered with a range of research and development organizations in Asia.
In SNV, I strengthened capacities of tourism-related organisations in sustainable tourism value chain development, small and medium enterprise development, public private partnerships, multi-stakeholder collaboration, participatory tourism planning, and development impact measurement. Developing sustainable and meaningful destinations was always paramount, it is at the destination level where the tourism and hospitality industry impacts and engages with communities and surrounding landscapes. Possibilities of creating regenerative and distributive economies and achieving transformational change in tourism destinations triggered my interest in the DEAL community.
Putting theory in practice… at the moment, I am also owner of an organic farm with overnight stay in Nepal, and ECEAT project manager for SUSTOUR in Bhutan, a transforming tourism and hospitality industry project involving over 400 hotels, tour operators and local suppliers.
