Alonso M. Acuña
Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands
Alonso is fond of mathematical modelling, AI, software development, languages and music. Two things Alonso enjoys: addressing any problem that orbits around sustainability and programming. The latter he mostly does in python or R but he is a versatile person who comfortably treks across uncharted territories. As a physicist, his research focused on molecules interacting with light. One possible application thereof lies in medicine (photodynamical therapy) but the very same topic also led him to building mathematical models of primary processes of photosynthesis - which plays a potential role as a source of renewable energy. He holds a Masters degree in Physics from the Humboldt University Berlin and a PhD degree in Biophysics from the VU Amsterdam. He currently works as a Data Scientist at the City Council in Amsterdam.

My wife and I have been hosting people in collaborative environments for the purposes of social change for over a decade. My purpose is to convene and connect nonprofit leaders, for-profit social entrepreneurs, grant-makers, impact investors and all other agents of positive change, thereby building the ecosystem for the social sector and creating greater opportunities for international social and economic justice.

I work in project finance in renewables with Virgin Money, lending to a wide range of renewable projects from hydro, solar, onshore wind, AD, GSHPs, biomass etc. I have previous experience working hands on with two renewable businesses (one energy software business, one company involved in solar mini grid installation in Southern Africa). I am a Big 4 chartered accountant and Manchester University MBA and I have also gained VC experience with IP Group, a FTSE 250 tech investor. I am really interested in this community, the concept of doughnut economics and am happy to get involved with conversations and projects for enacting the theories.

I'm a sustainability consultant based in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Scotland, I have worked in climate, energy and sustainability for most of the last decade and in social justice campaigns and policy for about 6 years before that. I live with my partner and our ridiculously cute puppy Remy and when I'm not advising governments and companies on sustainability, I love drawing and painting, swimming in the sea and growing veggies in our stubbornly sandy back garden.

With a love of Movies and a VFX (visual effects) background in Hollywood Feature Films / Post Production Effects a change of career was needed. From September 2021 I shall be studying an MA in Mass Timber Design in Barcelona (CAD solid timber buildings and virtually thanks to COVID). Having lived in the UK's first purpose built housing co-operative since 2000 I recently co-founded and am a board member of a Community Land Trust in South East London with an aim to build more housing co-operatives on community asset locked land. I'm also hoping to create a platform housing co-op incubator, an app to raise finance to build housing co-ops, hostels and hotels and house key workers, co-ops workers, the homeless and tourists alike..
