I am a communications and business development specialist. While running my own business I learned about B Corp and how there was an effective framework for businesses to operate in a way which put people and planet first (but not at the expense of profit). This re-lit and existing interest in sustainability and desire to leave the world in a better place than I found it. Through my journey (which has only just begun) of discovery, I learnt about Doughnut Economics and realised that this is one of the most powerful approaches for making a positive impact.

I work in the coffee industry and sit on the committee of the Specialty Coffee Association national chapter, SCA Ireland, as Sustainability Coordinator, a new committee role that was created in June this year. The purpose of this role is to examine the space where there is opportunity to insert sustainable practices in the many business types that our community operate, and also in our chapter activities and events. I am more keen than qualified, and really value being part of this group!!

I see many threats in climate change, but many opportunities in climate adaptation. I believe that the role and therefore the purpose of the economy is crucial to the success of climate adaptation. If we shape our economy according to the model of the doughnut and add more values than just profit maximisation, we can transform our economy and society into a healthy model. There’s no time to lose! I assist the GreenLeft party in our city and I initiate and stimulate sustainable projects in my neighborhood. My ambition is to become a changemaker which stimulate organisations, companies and especially small entrepreneurs to find a revenue model which makes them sustainable and social and help them create values which are important to their surroundings. Moreover, now that we transfer the sources of our energy- and heating systems, I would like to stimulate citizen participation, ownership and control on our own systems. Therefor I would like to implement the Doughnut Model.

Stacey Chassoulas
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
I work for a global consulting company where I lead a sustainability and social innovation programme. I am deeply concerned with environmental and social wellbeing and justice, environmental regeneration, and active citizenry. I aim to be more hands-on in working with organisations to create responsible practices, in better harmony with the natural world. I am joining this community in my personal capacity, having been inspired by Kate and the community’s approach to Doughnut Economics and downscaling the doughnut for cities and communities. I am very interested in exploring what can be done in Johannesburg, and look forward to learning from people forging the way in other cities, and meeting with members of the community in South Africa and abroad.
