I am a #vegan environmentalist working on the Plant Based Treaty campaign. I co-founded Toronto Pig Save with my dog Mr. Bean in late 2010. In the 1990s, I was involved in old growth forest protection campaigns in Clayoquot Sound and the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia. I did a PhD in political studies at the University of Toronto on the topic of green learning, drawing on models from the early American labour movement and civil rights movement and with environmental case studies on the climate crisis and old growth forests. I currently am ED of Animal Save Movement, a global network of chapters in which activists bear witness to pigs, cows, chickens, horses, rabbit, ducks, turkey and other farmed animals at the front gates of slaughterhouses with the aim of encouraging people to go vegan and become activists. I co-authored a book "The Secret Lives of Pigs" (Lantern). I work mainly on policy and system change via the cities and global campaign of the Plant Based Treaty.

Over the past 6 years as a researcher, my focus has been primarily directed towards advancing research in the realm of sustainable emerging technologies, particularly in their application to energy systems. I am a former Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow, now conducting research in Japan as a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) fellow. My research topic is dedicated to the development of #environment-friendly #cooling devices using natural #rubber. My research journey has exposed me to different countries and in contact with both academic institutions and industries. Through these encounters, I realized the importance of bridging the gap between academic research, industrial applications, and governmental organizations to address the needs of society and of the next generation.

As a seasoned social entrepreneur, innovation and smart city advisor, Paola is the visionary founder and director of the Colombian foundation, Platos sin Fronteras. Her current projects represent the culmination of her profound personal journey. Paola began her career in the private sector in Germany as an innovation consultant, later transitioning to the public sector in Medellín. In her role as the open innovation and citizen participation lead at the public science, technology, and innovation center, she spearheaded the groundbreaking Cities for Life program—a network of cities that championed the transformative power of citizen co-creation. This initiative successfully expanded to four countries, Peru, Mexico, France, and Ecuador. Driven by her desire to gain a deeper understanding of the essence of citizen co-creation, Paola decided to immerse herself in the community itself. Seeking firsthand experience, she began volunteering in the vulnerable neighborhood in Medellín. It was there that she became acutely aware of the alarming levels of malnutrition among citizens, particularly women and children. Recognizing the profound impact of food and nutrition, Paola realized that by fostering knowledge in these areas, she could effect significant change. This revelation motivated her to establish PLATOS SIN FRONTERAS—a food movement dedicated to providing nutrition education for families and fostering a strong connection to local, fresh, and nutritious food. Through this initiative, Paola harnesses the power of food to strengthen community bonds, promote health and well-being, and create new employment opportunities.  Paola's unwavering belief in the importance of nutrition for all drives her commitment to equity and inclusivity. She passionately advocates for collaborative efforts to ensure that nutrition becomes accessible to everyone, irrespective of their circumstances.
