Applying Doughnut Economics to Major Sport Events
The application of the Doughnut Economics to the Summer Feeling Event

As part of the Sportainable project seminar at the University of Bayreuth, we explored the innovative application of Doughnut Economics to the sports sector—an area where this framework remains largely unexplored.
For my project, I focused on a sports event, choosing the Summer Feeling Festival, a student-led sports and culture event in Bayreuth. My goal was to analyze its sustainability efforts using the Four Lenses Tool from the DEAL community, assessing both social and ecological dimensions on local and global levels.
To structure my analysis, I first developed a "Summer Feeling Doughnut", mapping out the event’s existing sustainability measures and highlighting areas for improvement. This framework provided a structured approach to evaluating the event’s alignment with Doughnut Economics principles and identifying potential interventions.
Through this process, I found that while many sustainability measures were already in place—such as 100% green electricity, sustainable mobility initiatives, and inclusion-focused programs—certain key areas required further attention. These included CO₂ compensation, visitor engagement in sustainability actions, and long-term resource tracking.
My research suggests that improving data monitoring, incentivizing sustainable behaviors, and strengthening sustainability communication could further enhance the event’s impact.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work on such a forward-thinking project and hope it contributes to the continued development of Summer Feeling as a model for sustainable sports events.
Many thanks to my supervisor,
