Breeze Across Oceans: Opening a Portal Between Korea and Uganda

What can happen when two communities, separated by more than 8,000 kilometres, begin to exchange drawings, stories, questions and everyday experiences — and gradually stop feeling distant from one another?

Breeze Across Oceans brings together Breeze Between Us (BBU) in Korea and AVIAS and children in Uganda for a live gathering that connects two communities across distance.

The relationship began through Doughnut Economics and Global Doughnut Day, but it soon became much more than an exchange between organisations. Children began sending drawings and messages to one another. Families, artists and community members joined the conversation. Their encounters grew into exhibitions, films and continuing exchanges between Korea and Uganda.

At the centre of this session are the children themselves.

BBU is a community of disabled children and their families in Korea. Together with children connected with AVIAS in Uganda, they have used drawings, questions, videos and everyday stories to encounter people living thousands of kilometres away.

This session follows that journey through five acts — Seed, Bridge, Horizon, Protagonist and Coexistence.

The idea of a “portal” runs through the whole event: a portal between two places, two communities and people who might otherwise never have met. Through short films, children’s artwork, live conversation and an online exhibition, we will trace how an imagined connection became an ongoing relationship.

The project has also grown through physical places. Neutinamu Library in Yongin and exhibition spaces including the Nam June Paik Art Center have provided spaces where children’s voices and the relationship between Korea and Uganda could become visible to a wider public.

Rather than presenting children simply as participants or recipients of a project, Breeze Across Oceans asks what changes when they become protagonists — people whose drawings, questions and stories actively shape the relationship itself.

The session asks:

Can a relationship across distance become a portal through which we see distant others differently — and begin to imagine a safer and more just world together?
