What indicators for maximum impact? 

How can cities and regions select and define goals and indicators that truly reflect their long-term ambition to live in the Doughnut — beyond short-term political priorities and what is merely considered “feasible”?

During the Global Donut Days the Doughnut Coalition Hamburg and the Swiss Donut Economics Network invite you to a webinar in which Doughnut practitioners from across Europe will share their approaches, experiences and insights into developing indicators for ‘Doughnut Data Portraits’ that support transformative change and long-term impact.

This free Webinar will take place on October 21, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM (CEST) via zoom and be held in English.
After the presentations there will be time for questions and answers.

Marieke van Doorninck  
Former alderman from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 
with years of experience in local politics and international civil society. She introduced Donut Economics into Amsterdam’s local government in 2021 and is working on several projects on cooperative governance amongst others the Postgrowth Marineterrein Pilot Scheme.

Local governments often design sustainability strategies and projects primarily around local priorities and political interests. Aligning these efforts with the broader ambition of the global Doughnut – ensuring that everyone can thrive within planetary boundaries – remains a significant challenge. Selecting effective indicators is a crucial leverage point in this process.

In their Indicator Library, DEAL distinguishes three interconnected levels of Doughnut indicators (Indicator Types*):

1. Long-term impact indicators (Status Snapshot): They track progress towards avoiding human deprivation and ecological degradation, and are therefore most closely aligned with the conceptual goal of the global Doughnut. These are the indicators that DEAL considers most appropriate for Doughnut Data Portrait visualisations. Example: the percentage of people experiencing moderate to severe food insecurity.
2. Policy and implementation indicators (Response Tools): They monitor the implementation of policies, strategies, programmes, and projects adopted by local governments and administrations to move towards living in the Doughnut. Example: whether a school meal programme improves access to healthy food.
3. Societal behaviour and system indicators (Activity Monitoring): They track industry activities, consumption patterns, lifestyles, and behaviours that are shaped by policy frameworks and, in turn, influence progress towards living in the Doughnut. Example: the percentage of children consuming the recommended daily portions of fruit and vegetables.

 Based on their practical experience, our speakers will explore topics such as:
✔️ Desirable versus feasible goals and indicators
✔️ The implications of strong sustainability
✔️ Degrowth-informed doughnut approach for transformative change
✔️ Top-down versus bottom-up and participatory processes for defining indicators
