A community bike ride celebrating Global Donut Days, Nanaimo style.
A morning ride through Nanaimo for Global Donut Days - part social, part city tour, but mostly an excuse to ride bikes, drink coffee and eat doughnuts.
Global Donut Days brings communities around the world together to explore what Doughnut Economics looks like in practice. Nanaimo has been showing up surprisingly big in that global conversation, even if some of the work still flies - or rides - a little under the radar here at home.
Over roughly two hours and 16 km, we’ll trace some of the ways Nanaimo is being shaped for the 21st century: community food, active transportation, food security, public space, recreation, local enterprise and some satisfyingly nerdy infrastructure. Along the way, we will fuel up with coffee and doughnuts from Harbour City Donuts.
Starting at 10:00 am at Diana Krall Plaza, the ride will make three featured stops:
- Beaufort Park Food Forest - community food, neighbourhood stewardship and shared public space.
- Boxwood Interchange - a surprisingly good place to geek out about active transportation, land use, infrastructure and what more people- and place-minded civil engineering can look like.
- Tom Harris Regional Food Centre - a major piece of regional food-security infrastructure connecting surplus food with people and communities across Vancouver Island.
From there, the group rides back through Bowen Park and the Old City Quarter, crosses the Bastion Bridge into downtown, stops for a doughnut at Milk Jam Donuts, and finishes with everyone hanging out together in Diana Krall Plaza.
The ride is deliberately casual and no-drop. E-bikes, commuters, fixies, ATBs, 90s resto-mods, rat bikes, basket bikes, classic steel - whatever you ride, bring it.
