About this event
Since 2019, over 50 local and regional governments globally have been putting the concepts of Doughnut Economics into practice through their policies, strategies and practices. We at DEAL have created some tools and resources to help this work, but we have also encouraged local adaptations, contextualisation and experimentation with the concepts. The practical implementation has therefore looked very different from place to place.
We at DEAL, through our Cities&Regions thematic area, have been supporting the work of local governments over the course of the past 4 years. We’ve done this primarily through light strategic 1-1 support, convening learning exchanges between different places online and in person, harnessing and synthesising insights from emerging practice, developing tools and resources based on needs.
However, we are aware that there are many practitioners out there that are keen to practically work with Doughnut Economics in a local government context, but are not sure how to get started or how to confidently lead this work. If you are one of these practitioners, regardless of whether you are a civil servant working for a city administration, consultant, researcher or working for a non-profit - this event is for you.
This event is also for those that are just curious to learn more about what has been happening in the world of local governments that work with Doughnut Economics and how DEAL has been supporting this work.
This event, led by DEAL’s Cities & Regions Lead, Leonora Grcheva, is designed to offer some basic information, insights and tips. Based on need and interest, we may host more of these sessions moving forward. Leonora will be joined by DEAL's Sectors Lead Ilektra Kouloumpi, who has been part of the leading teams working on Doughnut Economics projects in several cities, including Amsterdam in 2020.
The event will include:
- Presentation by Leonora covering:
- How have cities been working with Doughnut Economics to date
- Different approaches and adapting to local needs and possibilities
- Collaborations and partnerships for local implementation
- Insights and tips learned from experienced local governments and consultants
- Some practical tips on getting started, entry points, overcoming typical roadblocks and challenges
- How DEAL responds to interests, collaborates with allies and supports cities
- Key available resources and what support you can get from DEAL
- Q&A and open discussion with Leonora & Ilektra, welcoming all questions and enquiries, including practical questions based on your specific context and situation.

As a Strategist and Coach, I come alongside founders and to navigate with clarity, courage and intention. My work centres on championing leaders to live, lead and build well, shaping and that is healthy, and oriented towards long-term value and . Working globally, I am interested in how systems, tools and frameworks can be adapted in practice to support real transformation within complex organisational and social contexts. Within this learning community, I look forward to gaining practical approaches I can thoughtfully integrate into my work. As a practitioner working closely with people inside systems, to support both inner shifts in and external shifts affecting I am keen to participate in a like-minded community of practice, learning how others have adapted DEAL tools in their own fields, exchanging practical wisdom, and exploring how these approaches can support more and life-giving ways of living, leading and building enterprises.
