The Doughnut in Action: Introducing Climate City Initiative in South Korea

For years the doughnut model has stayed largely on civil society's turf in Korea, discussed in seminar rooms and campaign meetings but rarely tested by the people who run cities. That is starting to change. City governments are now being asked to join the work of keeping development inside ecological limits while still meeting people's basic needs.

The Institute for Green Transformation (IGT) is behind the push. Its climate city initiative, launched this year, takes the doughnut model out of theory and into practice, giving cities an actual strategy and the machinery to carry it out. A handful of Korean cities have already signed up.

This session brings that work to the DEAL network for the first time. It will cover why IGT built the initiative, how the doughnut gets translated into a working strategy inside city government and what the first participating cities are doing with it, followed by open discussion with attendees.

The session is open to anyone who has put the doughnut model to work locally, in Korea or anywhere else, or is looking to try. That includes people from civil society, city government and research, among them groups such as Donut Zip, part of the loose coalition that has kept the doughnut alive in Korean civic life for years.

도넛모델에 기반하며 실행전략과 이행구조를 갖춘 도시전환 프로젝트 - ‘기후도시’를 소개합니다!

한국에서 도넛모델은 시민사회를 중심으로 논의되어 왔습니다. 하지만 이제는 도시 정부와 함께, 생태적 한계와 사회적 기초를 함께 충족하는 도시 전환을 이뤄가야 할 때입니다.  

녹색전환연구소는 2026년, ‘기후도시’ 이니셔티브를 통해 한국 도시의 전환을 제안하고 있습니다. 기후도시는 도넛모델에 기반하며 실행전략과 이행구조를 갖추도록 돕고자 하는 이니셔티브로, 현재 한국의 도시들과 협업해 프로젝트를 시작하고 있습니다.

GDD 2026을 통해 이제 막 시작된 기후도시 이니셔티브를 DEAL 네트워크 내에 소개하며, 이에 대한 국내외에서 이미 도넛모델을 적용해본 시민사회, 정책 협력자, 연구자 등의 목소리를 함께 들어볼 예정입니다. 도넛집 등 이미 도넛 모델에 대한 논의를 확산해온 한국 시민사회도 함께 합니다.   

한국 뿐 아니라 자신의 지역에서 도넛 모델을 적용해보았거나 적용하고자 하는 모든 분들의 많은 참여를 기대합니다!
