Hi, I am Ananyaa Narain, an economist by education and a technology advocate by profession. I advocate for the use of geospatial technologies to achieve sustainable economic growth globally. Recognized as 40U40 geospatial professional of 2020, I advocate to bridge the geospatial divide for economic sustainability via research reports, media articles and public speaking initiatives.

Passionately curious about the big issues, I've spent the last few years working across sustainable development in a number of areas: delivering community resilience strategies, low emission infrastructure deployment, and briefly corporate consulting. I have strong beliefs in the power of human connection and empathy to drive positive systemic change; so now I'm exploring the social innovation space to help shape solutions to tackle inequality through co-creation and enterprise to add value to peoples lives.

My name is Alec and I’ve spent most of my working life trying to create a more sustainable, resilient and regenerative future. I currently head up Auckland Council's Chief Sustainability Office where we recently adopted Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan with a focus on halving the region’s emissions by 2030, reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and taking a precautionary approach to planning for change. A resilient, regenerative and more distributive economy is one of the key priorities set out within the Plan, so I’m really excited to be part of this community, to learn and share our collective experiences.

I am a purpose-driven and strategic movement maker, presenter and public speaker with a hands-on approach to production. Drawing from my 8+ years of international experience in community building, storytelling, and event & content production, I thrive on connecting people and driving positive change. With a background in communication science, international relations, yoga, mindfulness, permaculture design and regenerative leadership, my mission is to rekindle the connection between people and nature. In 2019 I co-created the Amsterdam Doughnut Coalition, a grassroots movement consisting of more than 1000 people in Amsterdam who are actively applying the principles of the doughnut economy. The impact of this initiative resonated globally, leading me to speak at numerous influential conferences, ranging from Berlin to Tokyo. My insights of the doughnut economy were featured in interviews with TIME Magazine and I had the privilege to deliver a TEDx talk about a regenerative future. Finally, I founded an international community, encompassing 30+ cities worldwide, to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration in driving the adoption of the doughnut economy.
