Humanity Horizons is an indigenous, youth-centered Community-Based Organization (CBO) registered in Uganda in August 2024 (No. 80034487117857). We emerged from the dual crises of post-conflict trauma and climate vulnerability, committed to transforming adversity into agency. With 64% youth unemployment, 32% mental health challenges, and alarming rates of HIV/AIDS and maternal mortality among girls (UNFPA, 2021), Uganda’s next generation faces systemic barriers to opportunity. We respond with purpose, Humanity Horizons equips secondary school students with climate literacy, entrepreneurial mindsets, and inclusive leadership skills positioning them as agents of change. Our programs are anchored in evidence-based, community-driven approaches that address critical issues such as deforestation, waste management, and food insecurity. Through strategic partnerships with schools, communities, and government stakeholders, we co-create scalable, sustainable solutions aligned with the SDGs, Uganda’s Vision 2040, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Our flagship Annual Student Climate Summit amplifies youth voices, fosters innovation, and transforms classrooms into hubs of resilience and social enterprise. We invest in dignity, agency, and systems change—ensuring that young people are not just beneficiaries, but co-architects of a just, green, and inclusive future.

With my wife France, we have created "The New Odyssey, the route to a livable earth", a maritime and cultural expedition from the Golf of Morbihan to Helsinki and back. We will sail from the 1st of april to the 31st of october 2026. And we will stop in 75 stopovers. In 20 stopovers, we will play an interactive show to promote in a way the Doughnut Economy with the story of "The New Odyssey" : this is The New Odyssey Event. Dear DEAL Community, Thank you for letting me be part of this community. I would love to work with you together in moving away from an ever growing economy that it's destroying our planet with all living being including us. I studied Engineering and an MBA. I have been working around 20 years in the medical device industry, which in my eyes is very meaningful but suffers also from the same problems our economy does. It's not sustainable and it has move away from being an industry that supports our medical systems to maintain human health, to become an industry that demands more and more diseased people to continue growing. I want to dedicate the rest of my working life to support an alternative economic system that is healthy for our descendants and the planet.

She is a participatory grantmaking thought leader, having practiced since 2010, she has designed and supported over 20 processes, and is especially excited by the models that explore non-competitive options. Kelley has been in the new economy space for over 15 years. As a Senior Director at RSF Social Finance, a non-profit social enterprise, she co-created the integrated capital approach to financing, oversaw $90m in philanthropic assets, facilitated community pricing conversations, and supported organizational culture. She loves unpacking the traditional assumptions that exist within philanthropy and finance, and exploring new ways to be in community around money that creates liberation for everyone. I've used the Doughnut Economics thinking to design The Public Plate - a framework for scaling Public Restaurants that rebuild our social connections. 💪 Purpose Our mission is clear: widening access to nutritious meals outside of the home, built on our need for social connection and belonging. But the PURPOSE of the Public Plate as an organisation is to enable that to happen, which is why the model starts commercially rather than rely on state subsidy. Public partnership is achieved only if the model proves its value. Designing regeneratively means avoiding dependency on any single body. ⚖️ Governance We're exploring Steward Ownership (a model we're learning about from PURPOSE®) to separate control from capital to protect the mission long-term. Decision making is kept equitable with Steward representation from all stakeholders. 🤵 Ownership Ownership shouldn’t be limited to those with wealth or networks. Our franchisees will earn ownership through performance, not privilege, borrowing from Everytable’s Social Equity Franchise approach. The people who create value should share in it. 👛 Finance Patient investment supports the early high-risk stage. A Social Impact Fund then provides low-interest loans to franchisees. As sites repay those loans, surplus capital gradually repays early investors and strengthens the system’s ability to support new operators. 🤝 Networks: Public Restaurants are designed to sit within a wider food ecosystem, working directly with growers. Our central hubs will take on some of the heavier food preparation and processing work, one of the biggest bottlenecks for small ecological farms, helping to support ecological producers and strengthen local supply chains. What's Next... We need pilots: to learn whether the operational model holds up and also whether people will genuinely choose Public Restaurants over existing dining habits. If the evidence shows real public benefit, that’s what unlocks partnership with local authorities, and importantly, that partnership could be open to any restaurant willing to adopt the approach.

I am a retired IT/Business Consultant (BA, MBA, MIMC, CMC).  I studied History & Politics at Lancaster and Business at Leeds. I started in engineering, moved to retail and then consulting. I have worked for large and small companies. I have lived in Leeds since 1984.  I would like to link up with people in leeds for ideas sharing, discussions and support. I am interested the paradigm shift that is needed to transform society. In my writing I describe this change to political economy as follows; politics from winner take all to a collective quest for good governance, and economically from profit maximisation the creation of the common wealth.  In ecological terms that would equate to a move from parasitism to something more sustainable (so at least comensual/communal). The idea of personal sufficiency and collective wealth appeals. The question is twofold (1) how to bring about the paradigm shift (or add weight to it as its starting spontaneously) and (2) then what happens - this is likely to be difficult, contested and critical because history especially with regard to revolutions is far from encouraging.  PS. I'm the Manager of Sustainbility and Resileince at Waverley Council, in Sydney Australia, where I oversee initiatives aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, enhancing water conservation, and planning for climate resilience within the community.  I've worked in environmental sustainability across state and local government sectors for 25 years and engaged in academic research, including a recent Master’s thesis at the Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney, titled “The Governance of Local Climate Commons,” which examines community-based approaches to climate change adaptation.    I'm motivated by fostering sustainable and resilient communities, to enable effective climate adapation through collaborative governance and practical action. Having recently applied the Doughnut to a Hyperlocal scale in our small, but dense Local government area with Regen Sydney, I'm keen to learn more from the DEAL community about how reporting and benchmarking can help us accelerate momentum towards embedding sustainability and resilient in our socisities.
