I came to Doughnut Economics through studying regenerative economics at Schumacher College in the UK. I returned to the UK from 22 years in Australia to do this.  I've done a few things...  I mostly enjoyed a 15-year senior corporate career (UK then headhunted to be a subsidiary CEO of ASX100) and then a 12-year entrepreneurial journey in Melbourne that brought me much 'success' in the way many measure success. I also became very involved in my local community, leading the chamber of commerce for 4 years, establishing a new tourism association and sitting on the board of my local 'eco-centre'.  In 2009 I converted an existing restaurant I owned into the first 'paddock to plate' cafe/restaurant in Australia (named Slow Down) before 'paddock to plate' existed as a term there. We bought directly from local farmers, producers, brewers, wineries, and distillers and literally had farmers walking in through the front door when we were open and talking to customers about what they were delivering. Provenance became key and telling the story of the food on the plate became our 'thing'.  In representing my business community I also led a local campaign to stop the development of public land by the beach into a shopping centre by stealth. We mustered 9,000 locals and it prevented the development from taking place. A parliamentary inquiry into the government handing voer public land for nothing and an Ombudsman's investigation into the local council exposed much, sacked many but led to me living through a real life Sopranos mini-series which cost me everything I'd built over 35 years and almost my life.  I've seen how corporations work, I've been an entrepreneur creating businesses (I believe in a good way) and I've seen how ruthless and corrupt the system can be when big bucks are involved.  These days I mentor business leaders, mainly in the hospitality & tourism industries and I'm building a tribe of leaders under the banner of "Future of Hospitality" writing articles, doing online events and about to launch a podcast  I'm learning about new ways of running economies so (at the tender age of 61) I can attempt to bring together my experience, skills, knowledge and passion, to contribute in whatever way I can to the change that's needed.

My experience includes over twenty years in formal secondary education, fifteen years studying and writing on global justice and regenerative cultures, ten years in the field of Permaculture, during which time I founded and built up the Boodaville Association.  The Boodaville Association provides opportunities for learning about permaculture, ecology and designing regenerative cultures. We are developing a land project and demonstration site in the Matarranya region of Spain – 2.5 hours from Barcelona, and we coordinate EU projects with the European Solidarity Corps and Erasmus+ programs.  I am currently focusing on delivering in person Doughnut Economics workshops in English and Spanish in and around Barcelona and am interested in running teacher trainings, helping to develop educational activities and games, and supporting initiatives that get Doughnut Economics into formal education.

I think part of the answer is given by Doughnut Economics :) Besides that, I have been working 20 years in the IT/Telco industry and I started sustainability consulting 2 years ago with CSRD and DE. My main focus is to help companies reflect on their business model and assist them. I published a book on this subject "Un donut pour tout changer". I also co-designed a 1h workshop to summarize Doughnut Economics using the same techniques as the climate fresk (to be published on DEAL). I hold a MBA from ESCP, I was trained in Circular Economy and I am a certified professional coach.

I studied traditional economics in university.  DEAL's approach considers vital areas in the current period, such as the environment and consequences of uneven development, whereas traditional economic theories also considered those items, albeit ceteris paribus, in promoting their respective analysis.  I accept the notion that the broader definition of "prosperity" is not necessarily correlated with a nation's rise in GDP.

Being trained as an economist I have been working in the insurance industry (and consulting thereof) my whole career. The insurance industry has undoubtedly an important role to play to support individuals, companies and governments when it comes to the damage or loss of assets, lives and environment. The insurance industry has missed the opportunity so far to communicate their purpose and the value they are actually providing (measured typically as a %-age of overall GDP). This is by far underestimating the true value insurance is bringing to societies. With climate change now being (rightfully) on everybody's agenda, I would like to explore the implications of the concept of doughnut economics on the insurance industry, on their business model, their products and further actions they can take to sustain their critical role in societies they have globally.

In 2016, I was awarded the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship through the U.S. Department of State. Since then, I have developed economic and financial analysis and leadership skills, working as a Political/Economic intern at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, a Contract Specialist with the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as various economics/finance positions with non-profits and the private sector. I hope to use these experiences and combine them with the ones I am currently gaining as a Junior Research Assistant at the World Bank (Social Protections and Labor) to promote a global, integral economic development, all founded on a strong ethical foundation.

I have been a high school environmental science and biology teacher at Prosser Career Academy for 20 years. I try to teach science through the lens of individual health, social justice and global environmental issues. My students have taught me a lot, but I think the most important thing is that without a real caring relationship between people, learning cannot happen. It is personal and emotional, and if it isn’t, then people probably aren’t learning very much.  The non profit I run called Chicago Farm Lab allows me to teach authentic, hands-on lessons about plants and animals, ecology, sustainable agriculture, self sufficiency, examples of entrepreneurship in local agriculture and so much more.

I am currently studying MSc Food Security and Natural Resources at CAT I'm interested in everything to do with the agri-food system in the UK and globally and strongly believe in the power of the Doughnut and the potential it has to bring humanity within planetary boundaries.   In regards to the current food system I believe that alternative economics are key to creating a just and regenerative food system that supports stakeholders and participants at all levels, while also restoring and giving back to the natural world. Modern economic theory with its strong capitalist leanings and emphasis on globalisation does not work for the production, consumption and disposal of food, and we desparately need to create environments for alternative ways of thinking and being.
