BrusselsDonut becomes… BeDonut!
BrusselsDonut has evolved into BeDonut. This article explains how we turned a challenge into an opporturnity.

Who is behind BeDonut?
The very same two people who worked on the BrusselsDonut project within Confluences are now continuing the journey within another association. Their aim: to build on the work done in Brussels and inspire cities and regions across Belgium to use the Doughnut as a compass for social and ecological transition.
BeDonut is now hosted by the association RCR² – Réseau de Collectifs en Recherche de Résilience (Network of Collectives in Search of Resilience), which has been supporting citizen-led initiatives for more than 15 years. These initiatives organize collectively and in solidarity to generate ecological and social impact: community gardens, Repair Cafés, solidarity buying groups for small-scale farming, local exchange systems and alternative currencies, third places, and more — all made visible through RCR²’s interactive map.
With BeDonut, the association wants to create “islands of hope” by identifying, supporting, and giving visibility to multistakeholder initiatives that are already developing today the collective solutions that our future needs.
Why this change?
Still rooted in Kate Raworth’s Doughnut theory, the BrusselsDonut team wanted to give the initiative fresh momentum. Brussels was among the first places in the world to bring this inspiring framework into practice, and it would be a missed opportunity not to build on that experience to inspire action elsewhere in Belgium.
At the same time, the political context in the Brussels-Capital Region makes sustained institutional support uncertain. That’s why we are choosing to continue with a bottom-up approach, extending our work in Brussels and beyond.
Our credo remains the same: to show, through concrete and inspiring examples, that a new way of doing economics already exists. By making these examples visible, we hope to inspire many more to take action.
In practice
BeDonut provides three types of support, along with workshops and awareness-raising activities, to help different actors use the Doughnut as a tool for action. The starting point depends on who you are:
- A city, a natural park, or a public administration: We co-create tailor-made pathways adapted to your needs, using Doughnut Economics as a compass for just transition, a tool for stakeholder mobilisation, and a framework for holistic thinking.
- A company or an association: We can provide information sessions, conferences, or awareness-raising workshops within your organisation or network. We also help you identify how your activities can contribute positively to local challenges.
- A citizens’ collective or a third place: We offer Donut workshops to assess the impact of an object, a project, or a space. These workshops also help mobilize volunteers and build a shared vision towards the socially just and ecologically safe space that the Doughnut represents.
