The Skills for Sustainability project took place from 7 to 9 November 2024, gathering more than twenty young people around Tunisia to discover bloc ideas targeting how to face environmental and social issues in a new way. Grounded in the principles of Doughnut Economics, the project provided an interactive and engaging platform for participants to learn, collaborate, and take action for a more sustainable future.
During three days, participants explored principles of sustainability and environmental justice. Working in teams, they created their own "doughnuts", where they mapped out key human needs and ecological ceilings for their local context. By applying tools such as the problem tree, and by simulating behaviours using a role playing method in the “Actors of change” workshop, they were able to analyse local issues and design solutions together.
One highlight of the project was the celebration of National Tree Day, where participants planted trees as a symbolic and practical act of environmental stewardship. This hands-on activity reinforced their commitment to creating a greener future and served as a tangible outcome of their efforts.
The project helped it to gain huge traction on social media using an awareness campaign and participants actively engaging with it online. A number of participants also commented that this was their first introduction to Doughnut Economics and were all the more eager to explore it further and experiment with it themselves in their local contexts.
On November 10, the project concluded with a closing ceremony, where participants were awarded certificates for their active involvement and dedication. By the end of the training, participants left inspired and equipped to be sustainability ambassadors, and the organizing team envisioned expanding this initiative to other regions in Tunisia.
The Skills for Sustainability project is a testament to the power of youth, collaboration, and innovative frameworks like Doughnut Economics to drive meaningful change.
Thanks to DEAL's financial support, this initiative was made possible and served as a valuable step towards broader environmental and social impact.
