The Library We Aspire To Be – A Portrait Story

On August 14, 2025, we held an internal gathering at Neutinamu Library as part of our journey to create a Doughnut Portrait of our place.

This session was designed to help library staff understand and take part in the Portrait work being led by Y-DONUT, a local group based at the library. It was also an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the gap between the kind of library we hope to become and where we currently stand. We began by exploring the differences between last year’s and this year’s approach to engaging with the Doughnut. Whereas last year’s focus leaned toward understanding the Doughnut as a circular diagram, this year we are centering the process around the Four Lenses and the Doughnut Portrait framework.

One question guided our discussion:
“People say our library is a good place, but what exactly makes it good?”

The Portrait process helps make these values and qualities visible and shareable, offering a way to not only better understand our work but to provide grounded material for conversations on policy and systems change.

We looked at Portraits from other cities and discussed how different dimensions might be applied—not as fixed checklists but as flexible spaces for reflection.

We asked: What dimensions are truly relevant to our context? What are we already doing well? And what areas are we overlooking but need to address?

For example, the dimension of “housing” was reconsidered in the context of a library—as a place that provides a safe, comfortable environment to read.

However, this raised further questions:  Does adapting or omitting certain dimensions go against the spirit of the Doughnut Portrait methodology as envisioned by DEAL?

And more critically, might we risk limiting our own potential and imagination by excluding areas simply because we currently lack capacity or view them as less urgent?

These reflections led to a shared desire to ask the wider DEAL community:  How have others navigated the balance between local relevance and staying true to the holistic nature of the Portrait?  What principles guide decisions to redefine or adapt dimensions?

Rather than a one-off sticker activity or checklist exercise, this gathering was the beginning of a deeper commitment to connect lived experience to the language of policy and long-term transformation. It helped us lay the groundwork to engage more thoughtfully with the Doughnut within the library.

We hope this process will deepen our understanding of who we are, who we want to be, and how we can grow into that vision—together.

2025년 8월 14일, 느티나무도서관에서는 ‘도넛 포트레잇’을 만들기 위한 내부 모임이 열렸습니다.
이 자리는 도서관에서 활동하는 지역 그룹 Y-DONUT이 주도하는 포트레잇 작업에 직원들이 함께 이해하고 참여하는 시간을 마련하고자 기획되었습니다. 우리가 바라는 도서관의 모습과 지금 우리의 현실 사이에 어떤 간극이 있는지를 함께 살펴보는 계기가 되었습니다.

이야기는 작년과 올해의 접근 방식 차이를 짚는 것으로 시작했습니다.  작년에는 도넛을 하나의 원형 구조로 이해하는 데 집중했다면, 올해는 네 개의 렌즈와 도넛 포트레잇 프레임워크를 중심에 두고 있다는 점이 공유되었습니다.

"사람들은 도서관이 좋은 곳이라고 말하지만, 도대체 무엇이 좋은 걸까요?"
 이 질문은 포트레잇 작업의 출발점이었습니다. 이 과정을 통해 도서관이 지닌 가치와 의미를 가시화하고, 정책과 제도적 변화로 이어지는 논의의 기반 자료로 삼을 수 있다는 점이 논의되었습니다.

참여자들은 다른 도시의 포트레잇 사례를 함께 살펴보며, 각 영역(dimensions)을 고정된 체크리스트로 보지 않고, 우리 지역의 맥락에 맞게 유연하게 적용할 수 있는지에 대해 이야기했습니다.  이 지역에 진짜로 필요한 영역은 무엇인지, 이미 잘하고 있는 부분은 무엇인지, 놓치고 있는 부분은 무엇인지 등을 함께 점검했습니다.

예를 들어 ‘주거(housing)’ 영역은 도서관의 맥락에서 ‘편안하게 책을 읽을 수 있는 환경을 제공하는 것’으로 재정의해보자는 제안이 나왔습니다.  하지만 동시에, 특정 영역을 단순히 "필요하지 않다"거나 "아직 못 하고 있다"는 이유로 제외하거나 축소하는 것이 도넛 포트레잇의 정신에 어긋나는 건 아닌지, 오히려 우리의 가능성과 상상력을 제한할 수 있는 건 아닌지에 대한 우려도 제기되었습니다. 

이러한 고민은 곧 DEAL 커뮤니티에 묻고 싶은 질문으로 이어졌습니다.  다른 커뮤니티는 지역 특수성과 전체 초상화 프레임 사이의 균형을 어떻게 맞추고 있는지, 영역을 새롭게 정의하거나 조정할 때 어떤 원칙을 따르고 있는지 알고 싶습니다.

이날 모임은 단발성 활동이나 체크리스트로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 도서관의 현장 경험을 정책의 언어로 연결해보려는 더 깊은 실천의 출발점이었습니다. 우리는 이 과정을 통해 도넛이라는 언어로 도서관의 현재와 미래를 함께 그려보는 기초를 다졌습니다.  앞으로도 이 논의를 DEAL 커뮤니티와 이어가며, 다른 지역의 경험과 배움 속에서 더 깊이 있는 방향을 찾아가고자 합니다.
