Regenerative Economics for Secondary Schools

An open-access, student-centred textbook for reimagining economics education. Enough material for a 2-year course!

Regenerative Economics Textbook: https://www.regenerativeeconomics.earth/home

We have developed a free, online, open-access textbook that brings the principles of Regenerative Economics into secondary classrooms. The resource supports both students and teachers who want to rethink what the economy is, what it's for, and how it can serve people and planet. As a detailed, comprehensive resource on new economic thinking, it's also a new vision for curriculum developers and education authorities looking to move away from old economics education paradigms.

Most of the core content is already online and ready to explore, including an introduction, and topics on households, markets, commons and state. Two more topics on money/finance and international exchanges are coming in the next few months. In total, it's enough material for a two-year course! Teachers and students around the world are using the book already, and it's become a reference for national and international curriculum authorities.

What makes this book and course different?

  • Reframes the purpose of the economy: not growth or profit, but meeting human needs within the boundaries of a healthy planet.
  • Treats the economy as a living system, embedded in society and nature.
  • Includes four provisioning systems, showing how households, commons, markets, and the state work together to sustain life.
  • Teaches systems thinking, helping students understand feedback loops, tipping points, and the dynamics of power and change.
  • Explores values, culture, and narratives, recognising that how we think about the economy shapes how we act in it.
  • Connects knowledge to action, encouraging students to participate in shaping more just and regenerative economies where they live.

And it’s practical:

  • Written for students: The text uses clear, active B2-level English for global accessibility and easy translation.
  • Modular and flexible: Each section can be used on its own or combined into a unit, semester, year or full two-year course. Suitable for mainstream, enrichment, or alternative programmes too.
  • Designed for classrooms or self-study: Every section includes comprehension checks,  short activities, further exploration links, and terminology for active learning.
  • Supports place-based learning: “Taking Action” sections in each subtopic help students connect big ideas to lived experience through inquiry, creativity, and collaboration.

Each section of text is ca. 1000 words, and follows a consistent structure:
🔹 A real-world hook to spark interest
🔹 Conceptual theory explained clearly
🔹 Practical application through short activities
