Two-year postdoc position in ‘Sustainable blue economy: Doughnut Economics for island contexts’

Post-doc profile

Researchers at the University of Cadiz, together with Doughnut Economics Action Lab, are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on an exciting Doughnut-inspired research initiative that adapts a place-based methodology based on the Doughnut so that it is relevant and useful to the priorities and interests of island-based societies, especially across the so-called ‘Global South’.

The postdoctoral researcher will help deepen and refine the quantitative and qualitative methods within the Doughnut Unrolled framework, which collectively provides a holistic snapshot of a place’s performance that combines local aspirations – to be thriving people in a thriving place – with global connections – both social and ecological.

The applied research will focus on case studies that engage with island-based societies in different social-ecological contexts (exact locations to be confirmed depending on collaborative opportunities arising).

Person Specification

Eligibility (mandatory)

  • PhD in ecological economics, environmental studies, natural/social sciences, or engineering.
  • Two years of postdoctoral work experience contractually documented.

Successful candidates should have:

  • Experience in one or more of the following quantitative methods: input–output analysis, life-cycle impact assessment or statistical methods.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and time management skills.

Other desirable skills include:

  • International experience, especially in places across the so-called ‘Global South’.
  • Experience in qualitative research methods, such as semi-structured interviews and/or facilitating co-creative workshops.
  • Knowledge of ‘post-growth’ economics topics (e.g. human well-being, planetary boundaries, Doughnut Economics, degrowth).
  • Experience with existing tools for putting Doughnut Economics into practice in places (i.e. ‘Doughnut Unrolled’).

Position Specification

The position will be in the Institute of Marine Research (INMAR) at the University of Cadiz (Spain), under the supervision of Andrew Fanning (Doughnut Economics Action Lab) and Andrés Cózar (INMAR). The gross salary will be approximately 38,500 euros per year. The contract will run until December 2025.

The call for applications is open until 27 January 2024, 23:59 CET. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews the week of 05 February 2024. The successful candidate is expected to start between 01 March and 01 April 2024.

Find the official call here, and apply online via the University of Cadiz virtual portal (in Spanish). International applicants are also highly encouraged to apply, but please note the online application system may be cumbersome.

If you would like support with the application process, please send an initial submission of interest directly to Andrew Fanning (andrew@doughnuteconomics.org) and Andrés Cózar (andres.cozar@uca.es), including your CV and a cover letter presenting your motivation for applying and how your skills match the Person Specification.
