Now I AM afraid of doughnuts
A reflection on the launch of the Leeds Doughnut
Posted by Leeds Doughnut Coalition (Climate Action Leeds) & Tim Frenneaux
The Leeds Doughnut Coalition started up in 2021, to bring integrated thinking and doing to the movement for city scale change. It was born out of the National Lottery funded Climate Action Leeds programme, which works for a zero carbon, nature friendly, socially just Leeds by the 2030s. Within that, the Leeds Doughnut's vision is of a city where people and planet thrive.
Portraits
April 2022 saw the publication of the first Leeds Doughnut City Portrait, a full research report and summary document setting out a sketch portrait of how Leeds is doing against the various dimensions of the Doughnut's 4 lenses. The report was launched at a packed-out full day event, with a diverse audience taking part in discussion, workshops and activities exploring what the findings mean for Leeds. Find the reports here: https://www.climateactionleeds.org.uk/leedsdoughnut

Project Work
This led to a number of workshops, events and projects in local neighbourhoods, such as the REAP Doughnut carried out over 2024-25 with Roundhay Environmental Action Project.
Films
In 2023, we were excited to premiere the Leeds Doughnut illustrated film at the 'From Vision to Action' climate assembly held at Leeds City Museum. Check it out below (and please like and share too).

We followed this up with a second film, 'The Clothes We Wear' - taking an everyday issue and exploring it through different perspectives and voices, all within a doughnut framing. We premiered it at the Leeds International Circular Fashion Week in May 2025. Watch the film (4mins), read more about it and find extra resources below.

Many Yeses
Over the course of 2025 we were focused on running a series of events providing accessible, creative and inspiring routes into understanding Kate Raworth's '7 ways to think like a 21st century economist'. These events were about saying 'Many Yeses' to all the variety of ways we can connect and create the positive future we want to see.
We participated in # global-donut-days in November 2023 -you can read the report here: https://doughnuteconomics.org/stories/the-leeds-global-donut-festival
For GDD 2025 we were out again in the autumn sunshine with a jam-packed programme for Many Yeses Day on Friday 17th October at Imagine Leeds. See here for the full story: https://doughnuteconomics.org/stories/leeds-says-many-yeses-to-positive-alternatives-4ebb8c25-4543-4d4c-83c7-d6a754dda0a4
Funding for our Doughnut Economics Lead Jenni Brooks ended in 2025 and the group decided to have a break, so the Leeds Doughnut Coalition is not currently meeting. If you are interested in connecting with others working locally on social and environmental issues, then the Climate Action Leeds network and Imagine Leeds are great places to start - check them out here: https://www.climateactionleeds.org.uk/

Hello I'm Rob and I've worked in the world of social business and social innovation for most of my working life - getting on for 25 years now. I started out working for a fairtrade cooperative in Leeds and then I worked for a few different organisations, supporting people to set up and run social enterprises. In 2010 I co-founded a social enterprise which aims to develop creative, collaborative solutions to complex problems. We set up various projects including Empty Homes Doctor and Zero Waste Leeds. I left SBB in May 2023 and I am currently exploring what to focus on next. I'm a big fan of Doughnut Economics - I loved the book and I really like the focus on both the social and the environmental - you can't focus on one without thinking about the other. I'm interested too in the circular economy - and more than anything I want to continue to explore ways we can respond to the #climateemergency. I write here on Substack and have written here about Doughnut Economics.

I'm a 37 years old food safety expert from Spain but living in the UK for the last decade. Our current model is unsustainable and that's we need to use frameworks like Doughnut economics to reshape our local communities and way of living. I have experience in food manufacturing and involvement of civil society and community work.

While most of my day job is evaluating software vendors' customer engagement platforms (CRM & CX), and writing about them, which provides me a modest income. One of the vendors, Zoho Corporation inspired me with their regenerative capitalist approach to business. https://cxcreate.io/zoho-the-exemplar-of-regenerative-capitalism/ So, I am now embarking on research into the field, and was recommended Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics book, which in turn has led me to the DEAL Community. I might be considered an old lag by some (67 years old), but for probably the first time in my life I'm on an adventure that I actually feel passionate about - to understand regenerative capitalism, and eventually to add my voice to the growing throng, and in a small way, play my part.

Currently, reading the sustainability and business MSc at the University of Leeds, UK. I strongly believe that the concept of Doughnuts Economics is critically beneficial for all levels of management of private companies to unleash their potential of products and services for positive commitment to global environmental issues.

I'm Nathan, originally from Huddersfield but I've lived in Leeds for 7 years. My background in Doughnut Economics came through my MSc in Sustainable Cities at the University of Leeds, during which I worked with the brilliant Otley 2030 climate action group on the local-social lens of their doughnut portrait. Since graduating I have started a role at Space2, an arts and social change charity in East Leeds. Here I am incorporating the principles of the doughnut into policy writing, and exploring the possibilities of incorporating the doughnut into participatory arts and community work.
