Karen Christensen is a writer, environmentalist, and publisher whose work as an innovative global publisher has depended on systems thinking. She has worked with academics in every discipline, including ecological economics. Her current focus is social cohesion and climate adaptation. Karen began corresponding with Ray Oldenburg, who coined the term ‘third place, in 1991. She invited him to join the board of the Encyclopedia of Community and in 2012 began to visit him in Florida. He left her with the task of writing a new version of The Great Good Place, which explains the vital role third places can play in solving climate change, loneliness, and political polarization. As Co-Executive Director, Alan supports MASS to build a more just, resilient, and beautiful world. He co-founded MASS with classmates at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and served as Founding Principal and the Chief Design Officer before taking on his current role. Alan works alongside Patricia Gruits, Co-Executive Director for North America, and Christian Benimana, Co-Executive Director for Africa, to support the leadership of the five design studios and the departments of MASS. In addition to continuing to collaborate on and lead select projects, he oversees various teams working across the practice. This includes Global Operations, Design Process & Learning, which focuses on three pillars: Accompaniment, Performance & Provenance, and Building Integrity, as well as the Advocacy team, which aims to bring MASS's work and the organizations they serve to the forefront of the public’s attention.  MASS Design Group has received the National Design Award for Architecture from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and was named Firm of the Year by the American Institute of Architects. The organization was also recognized as Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal.  He has recently led advanced architecture studios at Yale and Harvard and regularly speaks, writes, and helps to create films focused on the role of architecture in catalyzing social change. Chris Anderson, chief curator of TED, described his TED talk as “a different language about what architecture can aspire to be.”  Alan was honored with an International Fellowship from the Royal Institute of British Architects in appreciation of his significant contributions to the field. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders, a community working towards positive change and progress in various fields.  He lives in a house he designed in Cambridge, MA, with his wife Cristina and three children, Siena, Sage, and Sloan, who provide him with regular design critiques. Before architecture, he tried many other fields, but he is mainly asked to tell stories about a brief stint as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. Alan holds a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Hello, I am from India. I read ‘Small is Beautiful’ by EF Schumacher in 1996. Deeply influenced by it, I was searching for a meaningful professional career. In 1997, I found that and joined an organisation, which was far ahead of its time, a sort of social engineering experiment. A listed company, with the ratio of highest wage to the lowest wage at 1:5 !! It rebelled against the stock market, made huge social impact (20,000 construction workers with fixed wages and medical benefits - something unheard then and now in India). And a cult brand in the housing industry (which was then not an organised market). Moderate salaries, simple life styles. The company started in 1978, while I discovered them in 1997. But it all came crashing down by 2003, and I was left penniless (at age of 35). Since 2004, I was back at a regular corporate job, and rebuilt my life. But at personal level continued my life and lifestyle in line with my values. An attempt to make a sense of world is my constant state of being, and that dictates what I read. I read Doughnut Economics and finished it in two days - the last two days.  I am keen to understand where will this take us and be part of it.
