I am a transport planner and systems thinker who is strongly committed to addressing our dependency on the private car. I have previously managed the local public transport network in Tauranga, and now work as an independent consultant providing advice to local and national government. I am working on a Transport Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP) in my local area and see Doughnut Economics as the foundation for this. Sustainable transport needs to work for the complex lifestyles that people lead and offer them compelling choices which means that cars become an unnecessary expense. Transport in inextricably linked with spatial planning - where we put things dictates how we get to them. Tauranga as a city is highly car-dependent, and I want to challenge the status quo which says we can't change.

My background is as a STEM specialist, working in science discovery centres and museum organisations. I have helped establish the community-driven Makerspace Adelaide with a focus on sustainability and circular economy principles. I have a passion for education and critical thinking. I'm currently part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield libraries as a STEM Specialist, developing and delivering community Learning programs and overseeing the Parks Library Makerspace.

Graduated in Social Innovation within a Management study, I am passionate about music, cooking and food, and anything creative. I am active in the creative industry, working on art and culture related events to bring social cohesion in deprived neighbourhood of Breda, the city where I studied and currently live. Also, I co-created and manage the 'Young Creatives' community, a community by and for creatives where to connect, inspire and create with one another.  While studying and delving deep in Social Innovation, I got interested and passionate of moving from individualistic to collectivitic views and approaches to life, how to initiate processes of change and bring about different worldview. Hi!! I believe the Doughnut is an inspired tool which could be used to give local answers to global challenges.  I created the Doughnut Model for Gijón as part of my master thesis. However, wider views and further analysis would have to be included to bring real change. I am looking forward meeting people interested in accomplishing this task, and to make Gijón and their citizens thrive in the path.

My name is Sara and I’m a climate social scientist, political activist, and science communicator focused on social-ecological resilience and the future of our planet and this is what brings me to the DEAL community. I’m very interested in understanding how frameworks are built to protect and safeguard people and the planet in a time like today.  Earlier, I’ve been associated with some remarkable organisations such as LSE Cities, Sanctuary Asia magazine, the Sanctuary Nature Foundation,  the World Resources Institute, Earth Day Network, among others.   In my past as a divemaster, I have worked to support several coral restoration projects across Asia-Pacific, until I realised those are band-aid fixes, unless overall emissions come down and policy around fossil fuel and corporate expansion shifts, there isn’t much hope for our reefs. And so I came back to land.  I’ve worked with the concepts of the Anthropocene, rewilding, community owned conservancies, citizen science and the climate system. I am interested in human behaviour, international governance, and social justice. I worry about environmental policy being geared towards constant resource exploitation through advances in technology, viewing natural resources from a purely economic activity linked to a GDP/trade statistics perspective. I also think about how human behaviour is shaped and influenced by its surroundings in the climate crisis.  I enjoy designing public awareness campaigns, speaking to people and communities, writing, illustrating and looking for creative ways that help the public learn about, fall in love with and protect our green-blue dot.  I write for and illustrate for Sanctuary Asia magazine and am always looking for knowledge translation writing projects and opportunities that can demystify earth science for the people.  I love reading/run/swim/cycling in no particular order punctuated by being a couch potato. I have a special affinity towards socialist literature + memes and fluffy creatures of the biosphere.
