Doughnut Economics and Sport for Development

Applying the Doughnut Economics Framework to Sport for Development - The Example of an East African Sports Charity

As part of the Sportainable project seminar at the University of Bayreuth, I had the opportunity to explore Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics and apply it to the field of Sport for Development (SfD). The seminar, led by

, focused on the intersection of sustainability and sports, challenging us to analyze sports entities through the lens of the Doughnut framework.

Having previously worked for an SfD organisation in East Africa, I was particularly interested in assessing to what extent Kate Raworth's model could serve as a useful tool for evaluating organisations like the one I was familiar with, particularly in terms of their social and environmental impacts.

To structure my analysis, I first established a status quo using the "Doughnut by Country Level" tool. Following this, I collaborated with a former colleague from the charity to conduct a "Doughnut Impact Assessment for Development Projects" workshop. Finally, we evaluated the suitability of the workshop’s design for structuring sustainability strategies within our example.

Our findings showed that the Doughnut Impact Assessment tool is effective in identifying the potential impacts of an SfD organisation, as well as examining and questioning their practices and resource allocation. Although originally designed as an ex-ante tool, we found that it can also be valuable for assessing already existing projects.

Looking ahead, adjusting the suggested practices and resources to better fit the sports context while integrating insights from existing sustainability frameworks, such as the SDGs—could enhance and simplify its application within the SfD sector.

Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this discussion and explore the potential of the Doughnut Economics Framework in sustainable sports development. A special thanks to

for his guidance and support throughout this project!
