Korea’s First Doughnut Economics Course

2025년 3학기, 뉴조이스쿨에서 특별한 첫걸음을 내디뎠습니다.
한국에서 처음으로 도넛경제학을 정규 수업으로 연 강의가 바로 그것입니다.

이 강의는 파스칼 선생님의 확신에서 출발했습니다. “지금 학생들에게 꼭 필요한 건, 더 나은 세상과 연결된 배움이다.” 경제를 넘어서 삶과 마을, 그리고 지구 전체를 바라보는 새로운 틀을 학생들과 함께 나누고 싶었던 겁니다.

9월 8일 개학일, 도넛경제학 수업의 오리엔테이션이 열렸습니다. 매주 월요일 오후에 이어질 이 수업은, 단순히 이론을 배우는 자리가 아니라 “내가 사는 마을이 어떻게 세상과 이어져 있는가”를 탐구하고, 지속가능한 삶과 환경을 고민하는 실천의 장으로 열립니다.

그리고 하나 더 특별한 소식. 오는 10월 17일(금), 용인 수지의 느티나무도서관에서 열리는 2025 글로벌도넛데이에서 뉴조이스쿨이 이 수업을 한국 최초의 사례로 발표합니다. 방과 후, 학생들은 함께 학교 차량을 타고 도서관으로 이동해 저녁을 나누고, 저녁 7시부터 무대에 섭니다. 단순한 발표가 아니라, 한국에서 처음으로 도넛경제학을 교실 안에서 풀어낸 경험을 전 세계와 나누는 순간이 될 것입니다.

뉴조이스쿨의 도넛경제학 강의는 이제 막 시작됐습니다.
작은 교실에서 시작된 이 배움이, 마을과 세상, 그리고 미래를 바꾸는 파동으로 이어지길 기대합니다.




New Joy School Launches Korea’s First Doughnut Economics Course

In the third semester of 2025, New Joy School took a remarkable first step: it became the very first in Korea to bring Doughnut Economics into the classroom as part of its official curriculum.

This course was born from Teacher Pascal’s conviction: “What students need most today is learning that connects them to a better world.” Beyond economics, the class opens up a way of seeing life, community, and the planet through a new lens.

On September 8, the first day of the semester, the orientation was held. Every Monday afternoon from now on, students will gather not just to study theory, but to explore a central question: “How is my community connected to the wider world?” It is a course that invites them to imagine sustainable living, to engage with the SDGs, and to take responsibility for ecological and environmental challenges.

And there is something even more special ahead. On Friday, October 17, at Neutinamu Library in Suji, Yongin, New Joy School will present this class as a case study at Global Doughnut Day 2025. Students will travel together after school, share dinner at the library, and at 7 p.m. take the stage. It won’t just be a presentation—it will be the first time that Doughnut Economics is shared as a classroom experience in Korea, now reaching out to the global community.

The Doughnut Economics course at New Joy School has only just begun. But from this small classroom, we believe its ripples will reach far beyond—to our communities, to the wider world, and to the future we are shaping together.
