Opening a Research Institute and Publishing House with a Play

Neutinamu Research Institute and Anywhere Publishing | 24 October 2026

On 24 October 2026, during Global Donut Days, we held the opening of Neutinamu Research Institute and Anywhere Publishing. We read a play about the people who had brought the institute together, then introduced the work the institute and publishing house hope to do.

Opening Play Reading

So-yeon Lee (이소연), Gi-bin Hong (홍기빈), Young-sook Park (박영숙), Kyungmin Lee (이경민), Sumin Hong (홍수민) and Jinwoo Song (송진우) read There Is No Opening Ceremony, a one-act play by Professor Yoonju Kang (강윤주). The people who had helped create the institute told their own stories through the reading.

The dialogue traced how reading Doughnut Economics helped us reconsider Neutinamu’s work on care and resource circulation, how Kyungmin Lee invited Gi-bin Hong and other researchers to work together, and how the interns joined. Sumin Hong brought Jinwoo Song, and more people followed. The play described this chain of invitations as bringing people together “like a string of dried fish.”

Director So-yeon Lee offered to be the institute’s “hard hat,” protecting it as it tried new things. At the end of the reading, Kyungmin Lee turned to the audience and invited them to join us. Sumin Hong replied, “You can just say ‘yes’.” The performance ended with an invitation to become part of the institute’s work.

Introducing Neutinamu Research Institute

We then introduced Neutinamu Research Institute: a network of researchers who will work with Neutinamu Library to create a just and safe place. Participation is not limited to a fixed membership. We hope a diverse group of researchers will come together to try a range of experiments.

The questions we want to pursue at the institute are close to everyday life. What does the good life we hope for look like? What do we need, and what resources do we already have? Researchers and citizens will look together at what we have done at the library, exploring the conditions that make these practices possible and allow them to continue. We want citizens sharing their experiences, listening to one another and thinking together to be an important part of the research.

The language and context of research can help us explain more clearly what our work means and what conditions it needs in the future. We can share our experiences with colleagues in other places and learn from one another’s efforts. Neutinamu Research Institute hopes to continue these encounters and this research.

Introducing Anywhere Publishing

“A library that welcomes anyone, a publisher that carries stories anywhere.”

Kyungmin Lee
introduced Anywhere Publishing with these words. The publishing house starts from Neutinamu Library’s commitment to the public good, the value we hold most important. We have worked to lower barriers so that anyone can feel comfortable coming in to read, ask questions and share their own stories.

From a library that anyone can come to, we are now going beyond the invitation to come in: we will go out and meet people, anywhere. Anywhere Publishing will carry Neutinamu Library’s commitment to the public good into its books.

That day, we shared publishing plans including A Century of Everyday Living (백년의 살림살이), The People Behind the Word “Migration” (이주라는 이름 뒤의 사람들), and a Korean edition of Drawing a Doughnut Portrait (도넛초상화 그리기). We plan to turn the stories and questions we encounter at the library into books and meet more people through them.
