How do we distinguish the price of something from its worth?
My latest Substack article begins with Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, then turns to the living planet on which every economy depends. It explores planetary boundaries, the limitations of GDP as a measure of prosperity, and Earth as a shared inheritance. What would change if economic decisions recognised our responsibility for the global commons, including towards people who have yet to be born?
These questions connect closely with Doughnut Economics and its ambition to meet human needs within planetary limits. They also inform the science-fantasy novel I’m writing, Grand Meridian Hotel.
I would welcome the DEAL community’s thoughts, particularly on how this understanding of shared inheritance could shape economic decisions in practice. The article and my novel hint at the need to rethink and rewrite the story humanity has created called it Economics. The novel itself will explore Hothouse Earth and helps the reader to appreciate the rarest of gifts nature has given us.
