Ecosystem Intelligence (local-ecological lense)

The EI tool analyses ecosystem services and helps obtaining data for the local ecological lense of the Doughnut.

Overview

The Ecosystem Intelligence platform analyses ecosystem services by first mapping land types, such as waterways, forests, and urban zones. It then performs gap analysis to identify areas for improvement.

Watch our timelapse to see how we mapped Riga.

Why use it?

We used the Ecosystem Intelligence tool to evaluate Riga’s ecological services, supporting our Doughnut City Portrait analysis. Thanks to the Ei tool, we obtained data for the dimensions of Cleanse the air, House biodiversity, Store carbon, Water cycle, Regulate the temperature, Build & protect soil, and Enhance wellbeing.

Read the Riga's Doughnut City Portrait and see the data we obtained from the EI tool (section 3.3.)

The analysis covers natural benefit production across climate, air quality, water, biodiversity, soil, and social factors. This enables cities to understand where they stand and develop scenarios to optimise these benefits. The platform features a function to visualise the impact of potential projects.

Who is it for?

The tool is useful for those who build Data Doughnut Portrait and need data for the local-ecological lense.

How long does it take?

Approximately 1-2 days for mapping your city/area per land types
1 day for data analysis

What materials do you need?

Request access to the screening module with the EI platform.

What does the facilitator need to know or be able to do?

Basic knowledge of geographic information system (GIS), mapping, and data analysis.
