Joining the Doughnut Dots
An activity for getting to know the dimensions of the Doughnut and their interconnections

Version 1.0 (September 2020)
Overview
This activity offers a fun way to get to know the dimensions of the Doughnut and their interconnections. Participants are invited to take a card representing one of the dimensions then mingle with the rest of the group, meeting in pairs to introduce themselves and their dimension and discuss possible interconnections.
Why do it?
- The activity generates a lot of energy and it's a great way for people who don’t know each other to meet
- Participants get to see their dimension of the Doughnut in different ways through each encounter
- Through the many encounters, many possibilities for connections between dimensions arise
Who is it for?

How long does it take?
45 minutes, but can be done quicker
How many people is it for?

I am a social practice artist based in Bristol in the UK. In 2020 I was a part of an 'Artists Make Change' group looking at the importance and challenges of artists in relation to the economic doughnut. The main premise was the importance of Art, Culture and Creativity as a social foundation and its power in developing ideas, thoughts, behaviour changes and so much more. From this research many notes were collected. I like visual outcomes so one of my lockdown projects was producing a graphic that encompassed much of what we discussed in an open way that could inspire thought in others. Commonly known as the Art Doughnut it is a large complex graphic and so is not very screen friendly. However you can view it here and fall in on a word/phrase or 2 that you will hopefully find motivating. I am now working with Dr Cara Courage to try and extend the ethos of the Art Doughnut so if you have any ideas please do get in touch. We are especially interested in developing a web friendly version ( probably an animation), so any funding ideas for this would be very welcome. If you would like to see a bit more about Social Art Projects you can visit a notebook website that I put together while researching projects in the USA. Besides links to projects there are many interesting articles on the blog. This was one successful and uplifting project I visited. Assembly, an arts program run by the non-profit organization Recess that’s an alternative to incarceration.

My enchantment and fascination with the natural world began early with a love of animals, who I saw as ambassadors for other worlds. When I was 17, an extended hiking trip in the Wind Rivers of Wyoming sealed the deal. I teach lecture-based and experiential learning courses on sustainability, environmental ethics, ecological integrity, resilience theory, environmental psychology, and transformational learning at various Universities in the Twin Cities. I live in Mahtomedi with my three delightful children and two overly enthusiastic dogs. I consider my house one big art project, and I love to cook and entertain. Curious minds are always welcome at my table. Come say hello!

I'm a freelance WordPress developer who also specialises in digital sustainability. I co-organise a meetup group called Green Tech South West, and am the founder of a campaign called #LetsGreenTheWeb which I run via an online community called ClimateAction.tech. I'm currently doing a fellowship with The Green Web Foundation where I'm looking at how climate justice and digital technology intersects.
