About this guide
As the application of Doughnut Economics has gained momentum in cities, communities, and businesses, there is a growing interest in bringing this framework to various sectors. From health and tourism to the built environment, energy, waste, construction, fashion, and technology, numerous initiatives are emerging that seek to integrate the principles of Doughnut Economics into sector-specific practices.
Recognising this enthusiasm and the evolving nature of such initiatives, Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) is committed to learning from the field and responding to the needs of practitioners. The goal is to develop appropriate tools and guidelines that empower those engaged in transforming sectors. This guide represents an important first step in that journey. Designed to provide foundational insights, this initial version offers recommendations, while at the same time setting key boundaries to ensure the integrity of Doughnut Economics is maintained.
The guide was informed by a mapping exercise that we carried out in 2024, which revealed more than 40 sectoral initiatives worldwide that are currently using or considering using Doughnut Economics across various sectors. We conducted interviews with practitioners from 20 of these initiatives, which uncovered common patterns, challenges, and reasons that sectoral initiatives are using Doughnut Economics concepts and tools. By drawing inspiration from these early pioneers and showcasing practical examples, we aim to inspire and support others in implementing these principles within their sectors.
We acknowledge that this guide is a first step and that it will adapt and grow as the practice - and our understanding of it - matures. We welcome insights, experiences, and contributions from all sectoral practitioners to further enrich this dialogue.
Join us in sharing your lessons learned on DEAL’s Community Platform, as we collectively strive to turn the ideas of Doughnut Economics into action! If you are doing work within sectors and want to get in touch with the DEAL Team on this topic, contact us at sectors@doughnuteconomics.org.
And now, let’s get started!

Keen on adopting doughnut economics as part of an early advisory startup focusing on small to medium enterprises’ digitalization journeys. The coexistence of technology and sustainability should not be determined by previous economic models of growth and compliance. And it seems that this confluence warrants a new way of thinking about sustainable digitalization journeys.
