The Doughnut Table (printable version)

This tool was made for Industrial Design students to reflect on their thoughts around their future jobs. Playing in a group setting works best, but it can also be played individually.

There are two versions of the tool; an online version and a printable version. Here I will explain the printable version:

How to print and make
Please print the files that belong to this tool. There is quite some text in the tool, therefore the tool should be printed on A3 paper or bigger (the bigger, the better readable and the more fun the tool becomes). Please print on individual pages, when you do, you will print three pages, that show with dotted lines where to cut it. After cutting, one can use the cut between the elements "Land Conversion" and "Freshwater Withdrawals" to place the three layers on each other correctly. Use either double sided tape or a stapler to keep the three layers in place.

How to play with the tool
The usage would be placing the tool on a big table and let students stand and walk around it to pick elements.

The tool shows the Doughnut how we know it, introducing the students to the subjects discussed in them. The first layer shows the elements in the ecological ceiling and the social foundation. Folding open this element will  reveal the boundaries of that element as described by Kate Raworth on her website Doughnut | Kate Raworth. After reading the boundary, one fold open to the final layer, revealing the dilemma. The dilemma's show choices designers can make and help them reflect on the planetary and social consequences of those choices.

The idea is that a group starts a reflective conversation about this choice and why they would choose one above the other.

An additional option in playing with the tool could be selecting elements by following the dots on the first layer of the tool. One dot represents Level 1, two dots Level 2, and three dots Level 3.
