Shibaura House is a community space in the Tokyo district of Shibaura, a neighborhood in the south of the city near the port. In 2022, we set about to create a 'City Portrait' of Minato City, our neighborhood, with a desire to relook, and to understand what is truly happening in people's lives. Things have drastically changed due to Covid-19, and there was an urgency to reconnect with people who come to work, build a family, and play in the area. We saw Doughnut Economics as a great tool to do this, as it allowed us not only to analyze what is occurring in front of us, but also to think in multifaceted terms. Through this journey, we have manifested our 'City Portrait' in the form of an exhibition, which you can see recorded in the report on the DEAL website. We are currently in the process of transforming the 'City Portrait' into an action plan. We are doing this with several strands: collaboration with an artist who would use our resources, acquired knowledge, and contacts as a basis for her work. Collaboration with a landscape designer to rethink green spaces and biodiversity in urban settings, with the aim of creating a community project. We are also looking into emerging political voices by talking with young politicians or those aiming to be one, and to understand what motivated them to become politically involved, and what their communication strategies are. We have received great support from DEAL and its community in developing our ‘City Portrait’. If you have questions or happen to be in Tokyo, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

    Riga
The City of Riga included a Doughnut Economics approach in a EU project proposal (Pilot Project in the Net Zero Cities EU Mission) which got approved. This pilot aims to apply Doughnut Economics (DE) as an integrated, systemic, innovative, inclusive, and participatory approach to achieve rapid decarbonisation. The pilot will focus on the emissions domain of mobility and transport, as it is the major contributor of CO2, with private cars accounting for 42% of the city’s emissions. One of the project’s main activities is the development of a Doughnut City Portrait. This methodology will help identify priorities and select activities that align with sustainability and climate action principles, considering social, ecological, local, and global aspects. The second main activity is co-developing and piloting a set of innovative solutions to reduce air pollution and emissions in the city centre (low-emission zone will be implemented by 2027). The project started in June 2024 and has focused on developing the City Portrait. They plan to involve the stakeholders and re-evaluate the city's sustainable strategy for 2030 and program 2027 based on the results of the City Portrait.

    Glasgow
The City of Glasgow has ambitions to move towards a Green Wellbeing Economy in order to meet its social and environmental targets, and has joined C40's Thriving Cities Initiative. An important step in the process of becoming a thriving city is the creation of a (Doughnut Economics) City Portrait, a tool for thinking about Glasgow in a holistic and innovative way. University of Glasgow worked with the city to develop the first City Portrait, as part of the GALLANT project that uses Glasgow as a living lab to trial new sustainable solutions taking a whole-systems approach. In 2023, the Thriving Definitions of the first portrait (the Glasgow Doughnut) were adopted by the council to guide their future work, and to help forge new alliances across Glasgow's many organisations, businesses and individuals across the whole system.
