Schools & Education's 1st Peer-Learning Gathering

Synopsis 

The first peer-learning sessions focusing on the Doughnut Economics Schools & Education theme offered a space to scope out how DEAL may best support the diversity of teachers, learners, managers, parents, education institutions, around the world that are working with DE as one of the tools/models to transform schools and education in a way that aligns better with people and planet; all living beings and all ecosystems. 

We got to meet each other and begin sharing opportunities, as well as the challenges, that are driving this work. Questions among the group also fleshed out a diverse number of reach topics for future learning gatherings. Above all, we began to weave conversations in a way that presents opportunities to co-learn how to navigate the uncertain pathway forward towards regenerative and thriving futures together.

The full scoop

On May 28th 2025, we held the first Doughnut Economics Schools & Education’s peer-learning gatherings! In two online sessions throughout the day - one in Spanish and another in English - a group of practitioners in the schools and education space (e.g. teachers, learners, managers, parents) came together with the aim of nurturing and strengthening the growing communities of practice working with DE around the world. 

The sessions brought together an emerging community with familiar faces and new ones to Doughnut Economics. Everyone came together with the same purpose, though: to nurture a space to have conversations about how to bring Doughnut Economics in a transformative manner to as many school-age children as possible, worldwide.  Aligned with this ambition, we also set the intention of making this an informal, but safe and trusting space for conversation - a space that helps us build a community of care, learning and action that can support practitioners from around the world. In this way, we agreed to shape the content of each future session organically, always reflecting the outcomes of preceding conversations. 

Following a brief introduction to DEAL’s Schools & Education theme, which included the theme’s goals, foundational learning tools (such as Hello Doughnut!, Preparing to Teach,
Dimensions of the Doughnut v.2 and Doughnut University courses), and additionally what we are currently working on, we opened up the space to meet each other by sharing what brings each of us to the space of schools and education, what projects are keeping us busy, how are we working with DE, as well as questions on how we might get started if we still haven't!

As we started to map everyone’s needs, projects, collaborations, and the support that DEAL could provide to this community going forward, conversations got deeper, and the canvas of possibilities accelerated. 

The perspectives and interests brought up were enriched by the diversity of participants at the gathering. Listening to the cultural and educational experiences in different settings (schools, cities, countries) highlighted the need to do so carefully, to work together, stop ourselves from falling into solutionism, and embrace a ‘slow cooking’ dynamic instead. 

Key takeaways 

Overall, conversations for both gatherings made clear the following -

There is a strong appetite to: 

• Share with each other projects, resources, and initiatives.
• Learn in a focused manner  ‘how to’ use DE foundational learning tools in practice (e.g. explore one particular 'insight card', 'activity card', etc).
• Explore how to ‘sustain the work’ once you’ve gotten started (e.g. how to maintain/nurture the energy across peers, how to include DE in mainstream education as default, what funding opportunities exist to support ongoing/new initiatives, etc).
• Explore how to make space effectively - with peace and tolerance- when contributing to the shift required towards social and ecological regeneration, as well as the re-design of education in the 21st century. These surfaced as urgent across the Majority World, during the gathering hosted in Spanish.
• Make strong connections across the community that enable collaboration across projects (e.g. DE learning events across various schools instead of individualised efforts), and support ‘DE champions’ across the globe.

In terms of next steps, we emphasised the need to keep sharing projects, resources, and initiatives with DE in schools and education via DEAL's platform. This is important as it opens up new possibilities, amplifies visibility of each other's work, but it also creates potential new connections with other members in our community around the world. And so what?

Las primeras sesiones de aprendizaje entre pares, centradas en el tema de la Economía Donut en Escuelas y Educación, ofrecieron un espacio para explorar cómo DEAL puede apoyar mejor a la diversidad de docentes, estudiantes, directivos, padres e instituciones educativas de todo el mundo que trabajan con la ED como una de las herramientas/modelos para transformar las escuelas y la educación de una manera que se alinee mejor con las personas y el planeta; todos los seres vivos y todos los ecosistemas.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de conocernos y comenzar a compartir las oportunidades, así como los desafíos, que impulsan este trabajo. Las preguntas del grupo también definieron diversos temas de interés para futuras reuniones de aprendizaje. Sobre todo, comenzamos a tejer conversaciones que presentan oportunidades para aprender conjuntamente cómo navegar el incierto camino hacia un futuro regenerativo y próspero.

Toda la primicia

El 28 de mayo de 2025, celebramos las primeras reuniones de aprendizaje entre pares de la Economía Donut en Escuelas y Educación. En dos sesiones en línea a lo largo del día, una en español y otra en inglés, un grupo de profesionales del ámbito escolar y educativo (por ejemplo, docentes, estudiantes, directivos y padres) se reunió con el objetivo de impulsar y fortalecer las crecientes comunidades de práctica que trabajan con la Economía Donut en todo el mundo.

Las sesiones reunieron a una comunidad emergente con rostros conocidos y nuevos en la Economía Donut. Sin embargo, todos se reunieron con el mismo propósito: fomentar un espacio para conversar sobre cómo llevar la Economía Donut de forma transformadora al mayor número posible de niños en edad escolar en todo el mundo. De la mano a esta ambición, también nos propusimos convertirlo en un espacio informal, pero seguro y de confianza, para la conversación; un espacio que nos ayude a construir una comunidad de apoyo, aprendizaje y acción que pueda apoyar a profesionales de todo el mundo. De esta manera, acordamos dar forma orgánica al contenido de cada futura sesión, reflejando siempre los resultados de las conversaciones precedentes.

Tras una breve introducción al tema de Escuelas y Educación de DEAL, que incluyó los objetivos, las herramientas de aprendizaje fundamentales (como ¡Hola Donut!, Prepárate para Enseñar, Dimensiones del Donut v.2 y los cursos para Universidades), y además, lo que estamos trabajando actualmente, abrimos un espacio para conocernos y compartir qué nos atrae del ámbito de las escuelas y la educación, qué proyectos nos mantienen ocupados, cómo estamos trabajando con la Economía Donut, así como preguntas sobre cómo podríamos empezar si aún no lo hemos hecho.

A medida que empezamos a identificar las necesidades, proyectos, colaboraciones y el apoyo que DEAL podría brindar a esta comunidad en el futuro, las conversaciones avanzaron en profundidad y el panorama de posibilidades se aceleró.

Las perspectivas e intereses planteados se enriquecieron gracias a la diversidad de participantes en el encuentro. Escuchar las experiencias culturales y educativas en diferentes entornos (escuelas, ciudades, países) subrayó la necesidad de hacerlo con cuidado, de trabajar juntos, de evitar caer en el solucionismo y, en cambio, adoptar una dinámica de “cocción lenta”.

Conclusiones clave 

En general, las conversaciones en ambos encuentros dejaron claro lo siguiente -

Existe un fuerte interés en:

• Compartir proyectos, recursos e iniciativas.
• Aprender de forma específica cómo usar las herramientas fundamentales de aprendizaje de la Economía Donut en la práctica (p. ej., explorar una 'tarjeta de conocimiento', 'una tarjeta de actividad', etc.).
• Explorar cómo sostener el trabajo una vez comenzado (p. ej., cómo mantener/nutrir la energía entre pares, cómo incluir la Economía Donut en curriculos escolares como opción predeterminada y no opcional, qué oportunidades de financiación existen para apoyar iniciativas, etc).
• Explorar cómo crear espacios de forma eficaz - en paz y con tolerancia - que contribuyan al cambio necesario hacia la regeneración social y ecológica, así como al rediseño de la educación en el siglo XXI. Estos temas se manifestaron como urgentes en el Mundo Mayoritario, durante la reunión en español.
• Forjar vínculos sólidos entre los participantes de la comunidad para así facilitar la colaboración entre proyectos (p. ej., promover eventos de aprendizaje de la Economía Donut en varias escuelas en lugar de continuar con esfuerzos individualizados) y fomentar el apoyo a los promotores de la Economía Donut en todo el mundo.

En cuanto a los próximos pasos, enfatizamos la necesidad de seguir compartiendo proyectos, recursos e iniciativas con la Economía Donut (ED) en escuelas y educación a través de la plataforma de DEAL. Esto es importante, ya que abre nuevas posibilidades, amplía la visibilidad del trabajo de cada uno y crea nuevas conexiones con otros miembros de nuestra comunidad en todo el mundo.
