We aim to tackle the implementation gap of Doughnut Economics (DE) in Finland!
Humanity is currently operating outside safe and just boundaries across multiple dimensions simultaneously, confirmed by a 2025 paper in Nature, one of the world's most prestigious peer-reviewed science journals [1]. It highlights the DE framework as more urgent than ever. DE asks: "How can we meet the needs of all living people within the means of the living planet?" [2]. While Finland has officially recognised Doughnut Economics on its national sustainability portal [3] and in its Voluntary National Review to the UN in 2025 [4], and is also among the five nations signed to the Wellbeing Economy Alliance [5], a documented implementation gap persists.
This is the gap DEFI directly addresses through capacity building & community engagement!
DEFI runs Doughnut Economics workshops, a reading group and organises events to localize the Doughnut and build community connections across existing sustainability groups in Finland and the general public. DEFI also builds Doughnut Economics toolkits for organizations to use and creates a Doughnut Portrait through participatory engagement to inspire community action.
DEFI currently works with other community groups and student associations in Aalto University. We aim to establish collaboration with Aalto University departments in the upcoming years as well as with the Helsinki Metropolitan Area’s officials.
