Reflections on the GDD 2024 Workshop in Seoul

2024 글로벌도넛데이를 맞아 도넛집은 서울 연희동에 있는 보틀라운지에서 2024년 11월 7일 “전환의 재(탄생): 진짜 이야기가 시작되는 순간”이라는 주제로 워크숍과 이야기 모임을 가졌습니다. 

On November 7th, 2024, DonutZip hosted a workshop and talking session titled "Regenerate the transformation: how the real story starts!" at the Bottle Lounge in Yeonghui-dong, Seoul, to commemorate Global Doughnut Day 2024.

“헬로, 도넛”의 마인드셋에서 아이디어를 얻어, 같은 사물을 떠올리더라도 각자 다른 생각들이 있을 수 있음을 환기하며 서로 소개하는 이야기로 자리를 열었습니다 

The gathering began with a warm introduction activity inspired by the concept of "Hello, Doughnut," where participants shared their perspectives on the same object, reminding us that different people can have vastly different interpretations of the same thing.

오후의 워크샵은 도넛경제학을 직접 읽지 않았던 사람들도 DEAL의 여러 도구를 활용하여 도넛경제를 좀더 쉽게 알아갈 수 있도록 진행되었습니다. 도넛 걸어보기에서는 도넛의 안과 바깥 경계, 그 사이의 안전 공간을 걸어보고 서로의 느낌을 나누어 보았습니다. 도넛 위-안의 안전한 공간을 감각으로 느껴본 다음에는 도넛의 꿈 그려보기를 통해 각자 생각하는 안전하고 정의로운 도넛 공간의 모습을 그려보고 함께 이야기를 나누었습니다. 

The afternoon workshop was designed to introduce the Doughnut Economy to participants who may not have read the book, using various DEAL tools. Through “Stepping into the Doughnuts,” we explored the inner and outer boundaries of the Doughnut as well as the safe and just space within. After sensing the safe space within the Doughnut, participants drew and shared their "Doughnut Dreams," or visions for a safe and just Doughnut space. 

참가자들은 동네의 비건 식당에서 마련한 저녁식사를 함께 하면서 이야기 나누는 시간도 가졌습니다. 저녁 식사 이후에는 동네에서 활동하고 그 활동을 돕는 사람들 입장에서 도넛경제를 어떻게 만나고 바라보았는지 이야기해보는 자리를 가졌습니다. 

이 자리에서는 한국 사회에서 도넛경제라는 이름도, 관련한 내용도 아직은 낯설게 느껴질 수 있지만 사실 마을에서 이미 해 오던 활동과 여러 모로 연결되는 지점이 있음을 확인할 수 있었습니다. 

Participants enjoyed conversation and connection over a delicious dinner a local vegan restaurant prepared. After dinner, we discussed with people who were actively involved in local community activities. They shared their experiences encountering the Doughnut Economy and how it connected to their work. While the concepts of the Doughnut Economy and its terms might still be unfamiliar to many in Korean society, we discovered many parallels between the Doughnut Economy and the existing community activities.

도넛집의 가람은 선경과 함께 어떻게 도넛집이라는 이름으로 활동을 시작하게 되었는지, 지금 한국의 상황에서 도넛경제와의 만남이 마을-동네에 어떤 의미일 수 있을지에 관한 이야기로 자리를 열었습니다. 용인 동천동 느티나무도서관의 김은정 팀장님은 도서관을 중심으로 활동하고 있던 여러 커뮤니티들과 함께 도넛경제를 만난 경험이 기존의 활동을 지지하고 연결하는 역할을 했던 경험을 나누었습니다. 보틀팩토리의 정다운 대표님은 일회용품 없는 카페에서 시작하여 보틀팩토리가 계속해서 담고 실천하고 있는 제로웨이스트, 커먼즈 등의 지향이 어떻게 커뮤니티로 확장되었는지, 그 과정에서 해오던 고민이 도넛경제학에 대한 탐색과 연결되는 지점을 이야기했습니다. 

Garam from DonutZip opened the conversation by introducing how she and Sunkyung started the DonutZip initiative and how the Doughnut Economy could contribute to revitalising local communities in Korea. Eunjeong Kim, from Neutinamu Library in Dongcheon-dong, Yong-in, shared how the Doughnut Economy had supported and connected the various communities around the library. Dawoon Jeong, CEO of Bottle Factory, discussed how their journey from a zero-waste cafe to a community-focused initiative aligned with the principles of the Doughnut Economy. 

경기마을공동체지원센터의 곽현지 팀장님은 작년에 마을활동가들에게 도넛경제를 소개하고 함께 워크샵도 해 봤던 경험과 생각을 나누었습니다. 도넛경제학은 이론적 근거가 있으면서도 실천성이 있다는 점, 전세계적인 연결성이 주는 힘이 있다는 등의 강점이 있지만, 도넛 안쪽의 안전 공간을 한국 사회에서 실천적으로 계속해서 만들어나가는 데 결국 마을에서 사는 사람들이 어떻게 움직여 나갈 것인가가 관건일 수 있다는 이야기를 해 주셨습니다. 

녹색전환연구소의 배보람 팀장님은 기후위기 앞에서 변화를 이끌 정책을 고민하는 입장에서 DEAL에서 제시한 네 개의 렌즈를 활용해 마을을 읽어보았던 경험을 나누었습니다. 도넛 그림이 주는 선명함보다 이 그림을 지역의 사람들이 이해하고 실천으로 바꾸는 과정은 훨씬 복잡한 과정이 필요할 수 있다는 생각을 나누어 주셨습니다. 

Hyunji Kwak, from the Gyeonggi Community Support Center, shared her experiences introducing the Doughnut Economy to local community activists and facilitating workshops. She pointed out the Doughnut Economy's strengths: its practical potential based on its theoretical base and global connectivity. She also stressed the importance of local communities taking action to create safe and just spaces within the Doughnut. Boram Bae from the Green Transition Research Institute shared her experience using DEAL’s four lenses to analyze local communities. She noted that while the Doughnut model provides a clear visual, translating this into local action is much more complex.

이런 이야기를 바탕으로 함께 이야기하는 과정에서, 도넛경제의 흥미로운 부분을 각자의 실천 차원으로 연결할까가 쉽지 않은 것은 사실이지만, 그렇다고 해도 작은 실천들을 해 나가고 그 경험들을 오늘처럼 서로 나누면서 연결하는 것이 혼자 해 나가기는 어려운 부분을 함께 해 나가는 힘이 될 수 있겠다는 이야기들을 나누었습니다. 기후, 환경, 돌봄, 연결, 다정함, 희망 같은 키워드들이 계속해서 오가며 이야기된 점도 흥미로운 지점이었다고 생각합니다. 

Through these discussions, participants realized that while it might be challenging to directly apply the Doughnut Economy to practices, sharing experiences and connecting with others can provide the support needed to overcome these challenges. Keywords like climate, environment, care, connection, kindness, and hope emerged throughout the conversation, highlighting the participants' shared values.

2023년 글로벌도넛데이를 알게 되었을 때, 내년 쯤에는 한국에서도 이런 자리에 참여하는 팀이 생기면 좋겠다고 생각했었는데, 도넛집이라는 이름으로 직접 글로벌도넛데이에 참여하게 되고, 그걸 계기로 한국에서 도넛경제라는 키워드를 두고 고민하는 사람들을 더 만나고 연결할 상상을 하게 되고 보니, 그 경험이 얼마나 떨리고 조심스러우면서도 설레는 일인지 새삼 와닿았던 것 같습니다. 

When we first learned about Global Doughnut Days in 2023, we hoped to see some Korean teams participating in the near future. Now, having the opportunity to participate in Global Doughnut Day as DonutZip and connect with others interested in the Doughnut Economy, we felt a sense of excitement, anticipation, and responsibility.
