About this page

Since the first cities (Amsterdam, Portland and Philadelphia) experimented with Doughnut Economics in 2019, over 60 local and regional governments from all over the world have brought the concepts into their own plans, strategies in policies.

We at DEAL have supported this evolving community of practice through the Cities & Regions theme, where you can see the latest updates and tools, including a research article mapping the work of cities to date, and a guide aimed at practitioners.

This page collects all the links to the work and case studies of local governments working with Doughnut Economics that we are aware of. The work looks completely different from place to place: from one -off initiatives to long-term processes; from new metrics, to decision-making tools, to strategies and participation processes. Some of this work is ongoing, some happened in the past. Some has been fully developed by municipal staff, some done in partnership with researchers or consultants. Some has led to long-term systemic changes and shifts, some hasn't.

On this page you can find:

A list of 51 local governments that have worked with Doughnut Economics at any point since 2019, with key links. This includes local governments that have formally adopted and publicly disseminated policies, strategies, plans, tools, discussed council motions or run processes explicitly referencing Doughnut Economics. These documents and processes are either directly based on Doughnut Economics methodologies or reference its core concepts as guiding principles. The links here include anything from municipal policy links, to event recordings, to blog posts that captures some of the work done by that municipality with Doughnut Economics.

This is not the full extent of local and regional governments that have worked with Doughnut Economics - there are many more that are at the early stages of their work or don't have any publicly available links to it.
